Setup for Vertical Scrolling Game
Hi there. I am new to GameSalad and the forums. I tried searching for what I am looking for but had trouble coming across the necessities. I have yet to make anything with GameSalad and just want to start off on the right foot. I am interested in making a game using the iPhone 5 Portrait setup. I have the dimensions for what my artwork should be. 320 x 568, or that's at least what will be visible from what I've read.
I am wondering whether my artwork for the background (level) should be one continuous image that spans the entire level from start to finish and the level will just come into view as the actor moves further along. Or if it's better to have multiple images that make up the level. I hope my wording of this makes sense. The game that I want to make is based on a game I used to play as a kid, one of those from the 100 games on one disk back in the early 90s type of thing (where I can't even remember the name of it, but I remember the experience.) The basis is the actor will be a vehicle/ship/shape of sorts and will be able to move left and right, and possibly accelerate to a max speed. The normal speed will just be a constant unless the user chooses to accelerate. Sorry in advance if this is a lengthy description. Basically, the user will move left and right to avoid obstacles in the level and eventually reach the finish line, possibly checkpoints in between. I wanted to set up the artwork for the levels first and then go back and make sure that I have the logistics down.
For people who have made games like this, is it better to split images up and build upwards by making sure that the images fit together or to make one large image where the screen scrolls up and reveals it as the game goes. Like I said, I'm new, so any advice or help would be great! Hope to get some feedback.
Thank you,
E
