One thing I did notice were the controls. Have you thought perhaps of making the ship constantly go down unless a 'thrust button' is held?
This would simulate gravity (and not affect other moving actors) and could be a nicer way of controlling the game.
Having left and right at one end of the screen and up and down on the other makes for confusing controls sometimes.
