Here's a funny clip of Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel discussing the internet on the Today show from January, 1994.

They have no idea what it is or what is is good for!
This is also the year I graduated from college...

What you don't know, you don't know, I guess! I seem to remember I had the same confusions about the internet even a few years after!

A couple of sort-of-related posts, from the opposite end of the spectrum, as it were:

And this vid. which reminds me of the time I teased a friend's daughter (aged about 10) with the question: "Do you know what an LP is?" She looked at me with suspicion and finally answered: "Noooo – do you?" :-)

    Great vids, Gyro!

I first went online in 1995 I think. My friend, who was already into the internet, got me set up.

I sat in front of the web browser on my screen and said 'What now?'

He sent me to the Alta Vista search engine page - the google of its time.

I looked at the blank search box.

    'What now?'

    'You search for things'

    'Like what?'

    'Anything'

Seemed odd at the time! Also, i had an email address, but very few friends did. I thought emails were pretty pointless back then!

Love how the world is so connected now though! Hurrah! Attention seekers of the world rejoice!

Yes, QS, they were interesting times when the internet + email were vague concepts only in most of the general population's minds; seems difficult to believe now!

I kick myself sometimes when I'm reminded about a friend who suggested buying web addresses. Couldn't quite get the gist of what he was saying... I could have bought... hmm, let's see know, game.com, nike.com, bestbuy.com, etc; etc; etc; even something like barclays.com as none of the banks were involved with the internet until quite a while after, as you know... Selling them off would have been lucrative, to say the least....still, it's only money, as they say!

Definitely! Only trouble is all 3000 million web pages want attention... ;-)
