Accelerometer quick question

I'm using an acceleration movement for my actor and its connected to the accelerometer. More specifically just the x (left/ right) movements. Everythings great except one thing- when the actor hits a wall the character basically stops. This is a problem because when the user wants to then move the opposite direction it takes a beat or two to get moving (like moving a boulder from stop position- when i want it more like a marble ).
Any thoughts?
