Been a while since i visited YoYo Games but wow what a surprise i had when i saw they had a Mac version of Game Maker...imagine a drag and drop like GS but with loads and loads more features, great particle system and physics to die for and for a one off payment of $20.
If it goes well they will be adding in iPhone but atm it's just publish to Mac and early days.
A free trial is available to download http://glog.yoyogames.com/?cat=3
I will pop my $20 over to them later, this could be massive competition for GS as it already has a very large user base for the PC version and it seems lots are buying the Mac too.
Game maker has a very large following with great forums and we used it to make the pc version of Bumps a few years ago.

GM is something really different to GS.
Now GS is for iPhone and GM is for PC.
Yes GM could be a good GS enemy but only if GM will really offer iPhone support. In this case GS will be blow up by GM (a 20$ software with scripting language against a 100$ software without scripting GS won't win)
Also the price will be so good but the GUI is so horrible.
I "try" to use it for a month but I did't like it so i moved to TGB.
100$ of software for MAC/PC build (no annual renew but "life" license) but it's so professional and TorqueScript is a really good scripting language. You can do almost everything you want with it...
I need to resist. I'd love to create a game like Super Mario Kart, so if somebody from Gendai reads this: IMPLEMENT! MODE! 7! NOW!
It will be an instant switch for me when it happens...sorry guys but i have been using game maker for years and it will be far superior when it happens....ohh and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Darren.
Edit: Shame no iPhone support.
...when the site is 12 years old, like mine. (Well, it's not December yet, so my site is almost 12.)
...but a domain name look-up says the listing was created in 2004.
The Mac version is still very new, so is obviously going to need some time to catch up to the PC version. I believe theyre currently working on getting the games to build and run on PSP, and Im pretty sure they'll have an eye on iPhone/iPad once the Mac version has matured a bit.
Its definately another package to keep an eye on now theyve got the Mac version working, and another competitor to help keep Gendai on their toes.
But I think GS will make it better, it should make more features Available.
1) Poor communication!
2) Pro is too expensive!
3) Slow updating!
I think Gendai Games could fix those issues a lot sooner than iAds (or even iPhone support) could be added to Game Maker. 1 & 2 could be fixed in a day. 3 could be fixed by actually sticking to monthly updates.
There are other tools where iAds is possible. I could get Unity right now. $300 is not really a deterrent... neither is learning code... but I like GameSalad. To say that Darren could have been successful without GameSalad is basically an insult to this community. While my review was somewhat harsh, as required by journalistic ethics, the rest of this community was quite supportive. People from this community bought and/or reviewed Bumps. Also, GameSalad games seem to get featured more than they should. It's not just about software.
Was it a coincidence that UtopianGames was about to give up -- announced on this forum -- and then the next day it was featured?
How do I come to that conclusion? People watch each other here. Even though we are in competition, there is a genuine effort to help. That's why I point this out. By constantly pointing out competitors to GameSalad, I think that hurts the community. What's the goal... to get everyone to leave?!
I know how to use Google. I can find other development tools. I don't think it's appropriate to discuss it here. To say something like, "Hey... Unity has feature X. We should have that too!" is one thing. What's going on in here, I think that crosses the line.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Apple watches what goes on in GameSalad land. Probably not intently as we do, but a lot of apps get featured from this community. It suggests that they like GameSalad... A LOT... and I think that helps developers.

It seems like no, but they've got PSP and Mac?
What I would like to see happen is Apple buy Game Salad and then release a version of it that will kick the competition's ass when it comes to 2D games!
Will Apple simply buyout GameSalad and incorporate it into iWork or iLife? Wow, that would be amazing.
Then let Apple also buy Unity...
Oh damn would it be nice or what?
This is like if I went to someone elses website and posted try my game it's better then these
That's not right
With the iTV rumors, it seems that Apple is entering the console business. If it plays iOS apps and TV stuff... boom... it's now a four-way game console war. I don't know if the market can sustain four systems. That means everyone has to be ultra-aggressive. With Apple and GameSalad, there would be a lot of games... the better they make GameSalad... the better the games would be. People might buy systems just to see their games on TV.
WOW!
And anyway the Game maker Mac is excellent news to keep GS on there toes and give us all loads more features.
GS has a good head start but i have been with game maker for years and they guys over there work hard and fast.
I will continue with GS but keep a VERY close eye on GM.
They have my $20 as of today because i believe in the product and road map.
Darren.
What's the standard though? If I ran this website, I probably wouldn't like this thread.
You mention the speed of the Game Maker developers. Is that's the main issue? Is this to shake up Gendai Games... get them to work faster? If that's the case, I can understand. I feel like my games are held hostage, limited by the pace of GameSalad. Maybe that's not a rational way to look at it, but I often wonder if I should just experiment with other game development platforms. Not having hyperlinks and iAds is an issue to me. The loading times and performance issues, also another problem.
Yet, I think Gendai Games is a leader in this new market... or maybe they're just my favorite. When I look at the competitors, they all seem to have their issues.
