How to make a not choppy drag for iphone

Hey guys, i'm making an iphone/ipod touch game where you drag the actors around. How do you make a clean drag? Right now my drag is really choppy. When you touch the ball it goes to the center of where you're touching. I want to be able to drag it from anywhere. I hope i made this clear enough. (It's really hard to explain.)
