I found this great alternative, it has way more features than GameSalad, and functions about the same. It's meant for PC distribution, not for the iOS devices.

Yeah, there are several for PC games... not really an alternative to GS since you can't get the games into the App Store ;-) I think it will be a very long time before GS has any stiff competition.

    Hopefully not too long!

I'd rather just have the speed increases promised and not have to learn (and pay for) another app ;-) But competition can be a good thing, speeds up progress!

Yeah speed increases would be good. GameCenter support and then Merging Express and Pro for $250 a year. Then arrays, video, dynamic loading etc. The Future is only going to get better!

MMF2 will soon have an iPhone exporter( exports to xcode). Not as polished as gs, but same consept, no coding. And alooot sheaper:)

I'm planning to go back to Flash. It looks like I'll be able to make a game once and then export it to Web, PC, Android, iOS and Mac. It's not as easy as GameSalad, but I have experience with the software. Plus, there's a lot of Flash related material out there. It can also do 3D, vector and communicate with servers.

The biggest reason for Flash... I can upgrade to CS5 for $599... and then it's mine indefinitely. That's cheaper than GameSalad Pro, it's not a subscription and it's part of an industry standard suite... Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign, Acrobat, Illustrator and Fireworks.

The downside... I don't know when/if it will support iAds or Game Center... which is one of my biggest issues with GameSalad. Although, if I can simply export to web, iAds isn't as important. If I can communicate with a server, Game Center isn't as important either.

So... with Apple's recent announcement... it looks like I have the solution to my game development problem.

Competition is good, and I think there will be more drag and drop type software coming out in the future. Whichever benefits me, is the cheapest, and easy to use is where I'm going.

Hopefully some of the other drag and drop type software will eventually allow publishing to the app store. That would be great!

Yes, I'm very excited about Flash too. I have a few apps working on my iPhone that I made with CS5.

And Adobe just announced that they will resume working on it again.

So much has changed since they discontinued working on it back in April though. iOS4, the iPad, iPhone4 and retina display, etc. etc.

Right now it just supports iOS 3.0.
A lot of the new features require iOS 4 of course.

Hopefully it will be included in CS6. Perhaps they will update it before then as well.

And then Steve will kill it again... just coz he can ;-)

Maybe I should wait... skip an upgrade. I did some Flash research today. It's complicated. (Making iOS from a PC looked cool.) Adobe still has to recover from the ban.

Lack of iAds and Game Center is a bit of an obstacle with Flash and GameSalad.

I'm looking forward to the UDK iPhone exporter:
99$ per year, and 25% of the revenue over $5,000. Finally get to use my 3D skills:)

@Dhondon: Looked spectacular until you mentioned 25% of revenue over 5K

That would be a huge NO :)
  • AfterBurnettAfterBurnett Member Posts: 3,474
Definitely a big no! And I have Unity for my 3D stuff, anyway. Next game after the current one will be 3D. Pretty basic but I wanted to use my Unity license before I give up game dev ;) Of course, if my next two games sell well, I'll keep doing it. LOL.

Yeah, I agree with POLYGAMe and butterbean. I don't want to share my earned money.
    Anyway I prefer 2D graphics :)

Yes, but unity look like crap compared to udk. And no kismet.

For me, personally, finding a GS alternative is going to be difficult.

    I can't code. Period.

I *can* use logic, though, and I've been using GameSalad for over a year. So I know my way around pretty easily.

My colleague and I came up with a quick game idea on Friday. Today (Saturday) I've pretty much got the skeleton of the game made.

Over the next few days, we'll both be building levels based around this frame.

Realistically, I wouldn't be surprised if it was ready to show people at the GS meet in London next Saturday, with a possible release the week after. Will be great to get some feedback! :D

I don't think I'd be able to go from idea to essentially beta faster with any other software!

    QS :D

I agree. Developing with GS is fast. It's the best noncode tool out there. But I just cant justify the 2000$ per year price tag.

So pay $99 a year, like most of us ;-)

And I will, until I find an better alternative (mmf2?). Because I hate that gs logo, but not willing to pay 2000$ to remove it( not interested in iads or links).

2,000 is fairly steep, but there is no way I would ever pay commission for using a tool, ever.

@polygame: don't give up on game developing too soon! I think you will have a hit one day! :)
  • DhondonDhondon Member Posts: 717
Yes, polygame. Dont give up. Dreams takes time to manifest. If you need/want an partner for graphics/music, you can send me an pm.

Perhaps some of you didn't read "25% of sales OVER $5000." Cue word: over.
