I dont have experience on the Ipad, but it sounds like it could be a couple of things. First, how are you saving your pngs? Try to save them this way- go to file, save for web, and choose png 24. Make sure the transparency box is checked, and then save.
Second, your transparent area may not really be transparent. To make an area transparent easily, duplicate the layer with the image, hide the background layer, then delete the "transparent" pixels on the top layer, and voila! Hope that helps..

I cant recall ever seeing an icon on the phone or app store that had transparent parts. I would guess Apple doesn't allow it for some reason. Have you ever seen this before?

yeah... I wasn't aware that this was possible either. Pretty sure it's not.

Yeah I had that experience before where I had a simple fish icon in the middle, and the outside was supposed to be transparent, but instead it was black, so I don't think you can do that, you'll have to pick a color of some sort.

If you go to a website that allows you to upload your icon to see what it looks like, that would be a good test of what the final icon will look like

This might sound silly, but what about using white or off white (whatever colour the app store back ground is - I'm half asleep) and not using the gloss?

    It doesn't look like they're auto-bordered.

It is transparent. The background IS black.

I've seen it. The transparent area shows as white in iTunes, but your background shows through on a device. The only example I can think of is no longer on the app store though...for other reasons. I would say, try it, see what happens.

You can add transparency to a PNG file, which is what the smaller icons use. And they actually should appear ok when testing on your device.

However, for the 512x512 icon, Apple requires that to be uploaded as a JPEG or a TIFF - which does not allow transparency.

The submission guidelines state that only square shaped images are allowed to be used, and that both icons are supposed to match, but some reviewers do let it slip through.

I myself have never seen a transparent icon.

I didn't know that. I always upload the 512 image as a png and not had a problem yet. They probably convert it.

I'm doing that... But not transparency on the icon (on iPad device), the transparent parts appear to be black on the iPad springboard...

But when i open that icon file with photoshop (for exemple), the transparency is OK...

Anybody or any Chef here to say me if it's possible or not?
I have to make some parts transparent on my iPad game Icon.png...

I'm always getting that transparent parts in black on the device.

    Thanks a lot

I am pretty sure Apple always forces the transparent part of the .png file to be black. I am sure they want every icon to be the same shape on the device. I have never seen a transparent app icon on the App store. Do you know of any?

I am not sure, but I believe thst Apple tightly controls the transparency of the .png file you submit. They add the transparent rounded corners for example. There might be a flag that you can set in the .plist file that controls this but I am not sure.

Dude, I already answered your question. Because its transparent the black is bleeding through so it looks black. (This might have changed in iOS4)

I had a transparent icon for one of my past games, but changed it for the first update.
