More Stickies = Bad Idea

Tshirtbooth, what are you doing? This is a forum, not a wiki. If you want to create a collection of resources for users, why not improve the wiki? Adding more yellow posts for users to scroll through is an annoyance for those who already know where to find videos and other tutorials.

Perhaps useful information could be consolidated into one sticky. The "F.A.Q., How-Tos, and Searching the Forum" seems like a good place to put everything.

Just because there of no use to you does not mean there not needed here. I have had 4 emails already saying thank you.
That just says the wiki needs improvement. Forums are for discussion. Why aren't you improving the wiki instead of cluttering up the forum?

Ya, just yesterday I was wondering why the tutorials weren't sticky. You read my mind tshirt.

I'm glad they are there. But I think the new release stickies should unstuck a week after they come out

So why does it have to be three or more stickies? One useful thread, at the top... pick one and consolidate... and then link to complete pages in the wiki. Sticky posts seem to be ignored already. More clutter makes it worse.

    @photics

Due to the design of the website the wiki isn't immediately obvious since there is no top level link to it. But there is a top level link to the forums. Therefor I think people visit the forums, especially newbs. It makes sense to have a few stickies here about the most common things.
  • ORBZORBZ Member Posts: 1,304
    Well ya, consolidation is good

Photics, forum is for the community and the demos are made by the community. So this is the perfect spot for them.

I'm part of the community and I grow tomatoes, therefore, I should have a sticky thread for my tomatoes. Your logic doesn't hold. Why not have a sticky for every app ever made by this community? That's because other parts of the website were reserved for that purpose.

The wiki is supposed to be about educating beginners. Instead of messing up the one fairly functional -- and highly popular -- part of this website, why not focus that energy to something more productive?

    DEMOS, DEMOS and more DEMOS
    TUTORIALS, TUTORIALS and more TUTORIALS!!
F.A.Q., How-Tos, and Searching the Forum
    Welcome!

Those four stickies should become one sticky.
  • ORBZORBZ Member Posts: 1,304
@Photics, what's the problem? It's not bothering me that I have to scroll down a little bit more. The forum topics take up far more space and are used far less frequently (by me at least). I typically click on Forums then flick my mouse wheel down once. It takes me about 0.03seconds.

Just leave it... I like having the word DEMO and TUTORIAL up there. It's really clear what they are.

Photics, TShirt is one of the MOST helpful members here, so instead of looking at the glass half empty, and "complaining", why not look at the bright side.

He already said once they form a tutorial and demo section, they will be moved.

Hmm no wonder a app gets some good reviews and some bad ones, its all opinions, everyone has one, you do what you think is right and take flak from one side or the other of the opinion box. Tshirtbooth is not god, he is doing a job for free, dont slam him, its not right, but voicing your opinion is cool, you did it now move forward to the next thing, like making better games and getting a OS, like GS that address the real issues, like Inapp purchase, Game Center, etc etc etc and not costing 2K. Thsirt you are doing good.

Jeez man, chill out Photics. They are 2 new useful stickies, the amount of times i've been at work reading the forums, someone posts a great tut/demo and i cant try it till i get home. I then get home, things happens and when i get round to looking, its buried among all the other posts and searching can be hard at times. This just makes finding things 1000% easier for everyone, especially newbies to GameSalad. Tshirt has said he aggrees everything should be in one place and once the site is updated, it will be. As for the mean time, brilliant, very useful, lets face it, its not hard to scroll past those extra 2 stickies now is it?

Thanks Tshirt for displaying those demos and tutorials, i think it was a good idea
The best thing would be a tutorial and demos section to place these.
also.... @GameSalad instead of having only stickys could we also have some "green" or "red" posts to show what is /isnt a tutorial/demo?

Photics, i think you lost this one. :)

That's not exactly a fitting response for a moderator, is it tshirtbooth?

...and that's my point. On what authority did you make this decision? Is GameSalad now becoming a clique, where the "Sous Chefs" decide what's important and what's not? If it's truly about helping newcomers find their way, then the Welcome post should be made more helpful. The four weak stickies could be consolidated into one useful post with the current technology.

As for scrolling, this forum puts new posts nearly two screen lengths away from the top. That's bad design and adding more clutter to the sticky area makes it worse.

Well now that I've read this whole thread, I'm still confused on one thing.

    Wasn't Sarah Connors in Terminator?!

...and calm before the storm, indeed haha.

Didn't he cover that on the prior page by saying they would be moved?

I honestly don't know why you find it necessary to "beat a dead horse" when I think he made it very clear that he understood, and it would be moved.

Tshirt is more than deserving of the title "sous chef" wouldn't you think? He's bent over backwards to help people in the forums.

Even if your complaint is valid, you continue to berate the topic. Let it die. We heard you. Move on.

Before, I would likely have said yes. But now, I'm seeing problems. I think he's better at making tutorials and games than he is at moderating a forum. Based on the other responses, I was ignoring this issue. OK, if it helps people, maybe that's what's important... even though I think a better Welcome sticky would be more helpful to everyone. But once I saw tshirtbooth's response, I decided to post in this thread again.

What are my three issues with GameSalad...

    1) The cost of Pro is too high
    2) The communication is poor
    3) Updates are too slow and not as impressive as they've been

From this thread, problem number 2 has gotten worse. There's a clique with more information. Why is that fair? Why should people who trek to NYC learn more about the software than those who can't? Are not all members of the community equality important?

If there's going to be an update soon, it should be announced by an official representative of Gendai Games, not through the giggling of Sous Chefs.

I think that what Tshirt did is actually really good and probably took a long time to do.
Now the problem is GS. They have to sort out a better way to distinguish posts from each other.

great phantom post editing... if you are going to be privy to early information at least have the political sense to keep your collective mouths shut.
