If any, what are the downsides of a jailbroken device? Does it affect your game development in any way?

The reason im asking is because im about to jailbreak my device right now :)

4.1 is jailbreakable for all devices except the itouch 4G. What device are you wanting to jailbreak?
A disadvantage to jailbreaking is it will slow down if you install a bunch of crap you don't really need on it.

the only disadvantage is you dont get the new stuff from the new updates tell a new JB is out. So i still cant install the new update. But i much rather have myfi so no update for me.

I used to be able to tether my iPhone 4 after jailbreaking, using the TetherMe hack, not to mention turning it into an access point via MyWi.

But, I wanted iOS 4.1, so I upgraded.

Luckily for us devs, we can build a similar product to NetShare and that HandyLight app with the hidden proxy feature, both of which were pulled off the App Store.

I am using iProxy 1.0.1, and with Proxifier on my MacBook, I can get full 3G speed internet anywhere with it. No jailbreaking needed.

The jailbreak solution is not available for the iPhone 4 or 3GS yet.

What are you using to jailbreak 4.1, I thought the jb hasn't come out yet? I thought only the beta version was jailbreakable.

Edit: @BTT yeah thats what I thought.

    It's illegal.
    Thats reason enough for me.

As a legitimate business owner I just avoid getting involved in anything involving copyright infringement or illegal redistribution (piracy).

I'm sure there will be people saying its not illegal, but, it is.
Any unauthorized redistribution of software developed by someone else, in this case iOS is a violation of protected material.

Now, having said that I certainly dont make personal judgements on people who do.
Before i was involved in game development my iphone was jail broken lol

    cheers

    You mean MyWi?

I had mine jailbroken before 4.1 came out, then I had to kiss bye-bye for the mean time as I HAD to get my GC username ;)

JamesZeppelin it is no longer illegal. the law was passed that made it legal to unlock your device.

Loading hacked games on the other hand is a different story

Yep, and thats probably the #1 reason why people do it. What I love is spreading viruses on jailbroken devices by putting up fake apps on the torrents (honeypots).

My iphone is jailbroken. I really want to try gamecenter, but I can't give up MyWi. Having a hotpot on the go for my iPad / MacBook is way to important to me.

That's really the only reason I've jailbroken. Well, That and 3GUnrestrictor

i started a thread about this a couple of months ago and ended up jail breaking mine just to get netflix, within a couple of days downloading programs and emulators from the cydia store i noticed my phone was running alot slower ,it was cool to play golden eye and Mario 64 on my phone but not worth the performance issues and lock ups.then 2 weeks later the Netflix app came out. i restored my device to factory settings and haven't looked back since. I just hope they don't go back on the "grandfathering" in the unlimited data plan cause i use netflix all day long at work and if i had to pay 2 gigs at a time id go crazy.

One of my friends thought that when you have a jailbroken device, you can just go straight to the app store and get all of the paid apps for free. So what he did was he jailbroke his iphone and then downloaded over 100 paid apps, some of them were even $5.99-$10 LOL

Piracy, to me, is a cost of marketing. The people who pirate your games wouldn't have bought it anyhow. But they tell all their friends and blog about the games they are playing. Free advertising if you ask me.

I would be honored to have my games pirated a lot and spread all over and have millions of people playing them. It would generate buzz, some people would buy the games due to the noise.
