GameSalad Direct? Bye "y'all".

That's "Texas talk" for "Goodbye GameSalad"... I think Gendai (in Austin, Texas) made some joke about that awhile back, about how they can use "y'all" in their speak because they're from Texas...

But the bigger "joke" is what they have pulled with this "GameSalad Direct".

"In 2009 we democratized game creation. In 2010, we’re democratizing game publishing. GameSalad is moving into the world of mobile game publishing."

Perhaps Gendai needs to read the Wikipedia pages for "government" and "democracy", because they certainly don't understand the meaning. Democracy is not telling users: "you must publish your games under our banner and our logo, or else pay us a ludicrous fee of $2000+ per year!". Democracy, in government or game design, is about FREEDOM. Freedom to publish your work under your banner and your name, retaining the basic rights to your creation and keeping all/most of the profit.

And then this...

"In 1982 Adobe freed desktop publishing from the age old print shops and ushered in the era of the graphic designer. We’re doing the same for game designers."

What a ridiculous comparison. Gendai still doesn't get it. I'm a graphic designer by trade and university training, and Adobe did perhaps "free" the graphic design industry from the traditional print shop. They did it by providing tools to the designer. That's it. TOOLS. When I use my legally purchased copy of Photoshop, it's a tool, not an iron chain to Adobe. Under Gendai's interpretation of "freedom", if I use Photoshop, every image and every design I create should be branded with an Adobe watermark and Adobe should get a percentage of my profit from that design! That's not "freedom", and anybody who thinks otherwise is a fool.

But the choice is simple. Will you be fooled, or will you seek greener pastures? I deleted the entire GameSalad application from my computer a few days ago. There are other tools available to you. It's a matter of deciding, personally, what your threshold of abuse is. Corona SDK is perhaps the best option for those weary of GameSalad and its overbearing policies. I began teaching myself Corona about a week ago, and just this week there has been a sudden spike in new users. Guess where they're coming from? Good guess: they're GameSalad castaways.

I sympathize with those who either "can't learn to code script" or simply won't. I suppose GameSalad is your only option. But you'd be surprised to learn how easy scripting can be, and how powerful. There's really no comparison once you switch.

Ready for a change? Ready for something vastly better? Ready for something faster? Ready for full game physics including joints, multi-part bodies, pulleys, springs, wheels, and more? Ready for a platform that imposes absolutely no logo inclusion in any application? Ready for networking, Facebook, and OpenFeint leader boards? Ready for a platform that compiles to iPhone, iPad, Android, Nexus, and more? No chains and no handcuffs to the Apple Store, for those who might say "we're all slaves of Apple and the App Store!". If you're ready for these things, visit us over at Corona. You'll be surprised to see some of your ex-GameSalad friends already there, radiating excitement about what can be done with the engine, even if they don't yet know how to pull it off.

Democracy is about choice. I understand that some GameSalad users have been very successful and have made alot of money. For them, I applaud their hard work and tenacity. But there are success stories to be found elsewhere, and this one in particular. Jon Beebe, a former GameSalad user who discovered Corona and rebuilt his game in that engine... faster, smoother, social-networked, and superior in every way. It has also sold something like 120,000 copies...

Anyway, goodbye GameSalad. Perhaps it was a noble idea killed by absurd policies. I hope to see some of you in the Corona forums. We'll be waiting for you, eager to teach you the ropes, eager to see what you can make when unburdened by laughable company restrictions.
