No longer a sous chef - Still support GS

Ive got a couple emails asking why I am not a sous chef anymore.

I just wanted to clear anything up.

It has NOTHING to do with the recent changes.
It's 100% coincidence it happened at the same time as i reserve opinion on the changes until I see them. I still think GS is great. If ease of use has a few sacrifices so be it. I haven't seen any proof that it will hurt anything as of now. We all could say how we would do it better but the fact is we aren't int he position they are so, it all sounds cynical to me.
I am just to busy to be able to help out in the way I need to be as a sous chef.

No, its not super time consuming but, I am just really busy with my work and two kids.
On top of that i don't like being in a position of anything other than offering advice or opinions here. I dont wanna feel like i have to judge anyone and decide to close a topic or police things.

I guess i just don't have it in me.

Thanks and I apologize for taking up space with this.

Feel free to close it and let it sink quickly! :)

    TOPIC CLOSED. Haha, kidding ;-)

I feel ya pain, I wasn't having to delete anything until the recent happenings... really brought out the worst in some people! LOL.

It is hard, I obviously don't want to be seen as a forum nazi but at the same time, I really don't think we need all the negativity that has been flying around lately, so do have to hit the odd delete from time to time...

Anyway, at least you're not leaving!
  • If a point is valid and justified (and said in a non-offencive way) it should be heard (and not deleted because it is "negative").

I agree... just not when it's pointing customers to the competitors ;-)

Hunn just had a massive rant... I left it... I believe opinions are important... someone else deleted it, though. LOL.

  • I do agree that one should avoid discussing another product on a competitors web forum.

However I did not directly state the competition on this site.

No, you added a link to an article that did that. ;-)
  • Therefore it was indirect. I don't see a problem with that.

But then again i'm not the one who can close topics ;)

I still support and have faith. I'm still waiting for a reply from ANY of the emails I sent to my contacts at GameSalad.

In the meantime, I have no choice but to keep my options open.

I don't agree with the argument about not mentioning competitor products. At least, if it's not done in a ranting kinda way. For example, "I'm leaving GS and going over to these guys! (URL to competitor)", isn't too constructive, and wouldn't help things move along. Saying "competitor X (URL to article) also have a similar deal to what GS are proposing, and it seems to be working ok", would directly encourage readers to look into a competitor, but is presented in a way that supports what GS is doing.

There have been several messages that talk about Chillingo and other publishers. Are those also now competitors that shouldn't be mentioned here?

There are often reasons why GS is a good choice of tool for a given App. Sometimes though you maybe should have used another tool, but that doesn't mean you have to stop using GS. There can be questions like "I'm trying to make my version of Halo, can GS do that?" answered with "no, go look at Unity". Or "I want to do something like Angry Birds, how long will it take for me to get that good at Objective-C?" answered by saying "no need, just use GS".

Overall I think that it's good to know what your options are, and if something is pointed out that GS can't do, well, that's useful feedback to the team about why someone didn't use GS.

I don't really like the pessimistic posts in general. I'm not sure there's a big difference between the ones that say they are going to stop using GS, and the ones that say they're going to stop using it and head over to Corona. I wish everyone would stay more hopeful for the moment!

Seriously, is there any justification for keeping up working on GS, when it will not be available in a few months?

Is it true they are going to start charging for compiles?

Is it true they want to own your work and control it?

I've been of the opinion that it was a fairly good prototyping tool, to make a proof of concept. Will it still be that?

I believe that they will charge a fee to submit an app (via them, to the app store).

They do not want to 'own' your work. You retain full ownership of your IP, as well as deciding on pricing, if it should be removed from sale or not, etc etc.

As far as I know, anyway. Who knows what they're talking about behind closed doors, eh?

    Thanks QS,

Will you still be able to use the GameSalad tool as before, not having them be the publisher? (WHo needs a publisher, I thought that was the point of the App Store)

Will it at least still work as I have been using it (as a prototype generator)

If you have a current express or pro licence, it's business as usual for you till that runs out.

Tool updates (such as memory leak stuff and making things faster in general) will be available, as I understand it, to all (express/pro/GSDirect).

I have no idea what *new* features will be given to Express/Pro users. So I have no idea what we'll get if we stick to express/pro. I'm hoping we'll at least get GameCentre (probably not in the next update) and that everyone will be able to use it.

I just don't know though. Sorry.
