Game Spoof

If I made a game where the main character had a red hat, shot fireballs, collected coins and was trying to save a princess... is that allowed? All the graphics would be unique and 100% done by me and I wouldn't use any words like, Mario, Yoshi or Bowser.

I haven't seen any other game spoofs on the itunes store so I wasn't sure if it was illegal or not.

If you know of any iphone games that kinda "make fun" of famous games or know the legality of it please let me know.

Thanks!

The developers of Giana Sisters ended up in a world of hurt back in the C64 days for this very thing. I reckon you'll be fine, though... hell, Duck Hunt Kid ripped off Duck Hunt entirely, even with original graphics and Nintendo did nothing... not that doing that is a good idea! LOL

if you can make it in a way that is amusing then it might do ok. But if it is done through a lack of original ideas then i wouldn't bother, it would be a big project that if failing in humor would just leave people scratching their heads.

It probably won't be "amusing"... I'm not trying to make fun or copy mario, just make a game that has a similar style of game play.

Thats for the suggestion and feedback. I really appreciate it!

In which case if it's not a spoof then try to think of something really original and not use the mario ideas. Sure, some aspects of platformers will always be the same but think of something that makes it stand out.

As long as it has a point of difference, you'll be fine. Remember Kid Chameleon? Very Mario-esque. Even the original Wonder Boy...
