What are compress images and export for iphone options for?

I have a few questions now that I'm getting used to the interface.

I see compress images in the menu. What does that do? Re-encode pngs to be smaller? Pre-multiply alpha?

I'm also not sure what export for iphone does? It seems to export a binary file instead of the normal xml one. Is this option just for debugging?

How efficient are jpg files on the iPhone? Should they be avoided?

I would stick to PNG. You can use JPEG, but PNG files support transparency that the others do not. You can use Adobe's Fireworks for creating great PNG files.
