To Renew or Not To Renew ???

edited November -1 in Working with GS (Mac)
Both my GS and Apple Dev Licence come up for renewal in the next 30 days. I emailed GS but their response really didn't say anything (see below).

"Sorry for the delay in response.

GameSalad Direct will help bring more power, more control, and more freedom to independent game designers than ever before. We are currently working on some adjustments to address the concerns of our dedicated community of independent developers.

We will be providing you with more details in the days leading up to GameSalad Direct. Again, thank you for using GameSalad."

Pretty standard response and I'm none the wiser as to whether I need to renew my Apple Dev license. Seems like the GS team are waiting on things themselves.

Well I don't think you can renew your GS license (because of GS direct) and without that you will have to use another platform to take advantage of your Apple DEV account. If you don't plan make games on any other platform then renewing your dev account would be useless .

I'd hold off renewing unless you have a heap of time left on your GS subscription. Not much point renewing if you intend to use GS Direct, though, as you would have wasted a hundred backs ;-)

EDIT: DOH! Just read that your GS license is about to expire too. LOL. Yeah, wait and see time, I guess!

Unless you make enough money from games already on the AppStore to cover the license cost. if you don't renew I believe the apps are pulled from the store. Although I'm not 100% about that!

If you have titles in the AppStore or music in iTunes, they will get pulled once your Apple ID expires. They're not going to be able to accept money from customer to ultimately pay no one, nor want to be responsible to keep track of that in your absence, or if you never return. Also, they don't want to put up a program that's no longer "supported" by its developer.

Didn't GS-D say they would sort out extensions for people about to expire?

And yeah, if you let your Apple dev license lapse, your existing apps will be removed from the store.

With no way to move them over to GS-D yet, if you want them to stay for sale, you will have to renew that.

Yeah, that's why I emailed them but their response seemed like a brush off.

    That either means
    a. They were lying
    or
    b. The GS-direct release is sooner than we might have expected.

The way things are going round here at the mo...who knows.

I don't think a GS extension would help in this situation IF you plan to use GSD once it comes out.

If you got the GS extension would you turn around and renew your Apple license? Remember, the plan with GSD is to remove that barrier.

I think its a case of

1 - If your apps earn over $99 a year then its worth buying the license

    or

2 - If they don't then you may as well let it expire and wait for GSD.
  • SparkyidrSparkyidr Member Posts: 2,033
    That's the thing though.

If they give a GS extension for say....3 months. But his apple runs out in 1 month. And GS doesn't come out for 3 months.... he's screwed if he doesn't renew his Apple Dev????

Probably have to decide if he is going to use GS Direct or going to use corona etc. If he is going to use GS direct and his apps don't bring in enough to cover the apple dev license, I would probably just sit tight and wait for GS direct to come out. Any apps released in the 3 month GS extension wouldn't be able to be updated after it runs out anyway. Use the time to create a game ready for GSD, hopefully it will be easy to update existing GS projects with the GSD features.

    >Any apps released in the 3 month GS extension wouldn't be able to be updated after it runs out anyway

But they could (according to the FAQ) be transferred over to GSD once it kicks in.
  • gazjmgazjm Member Posts: 578
hopefully the transfer is what it sounds like, being able to just transfer it, and not that you have to republish the app causing any updates to not go to people who have already purchased it. Fingers crossed!

I don't think you can straight transfer it. I think their model is republish. If they actually gave answers this would be crystal clear, but it ain't.

I received this email from the team at GS a short time ago.

"Sorry if that last response wasn't as fruitful as you would have liked. (We're reading the forums) As we have not finalized what GameSalad Direct will be, since we are making the adjustments to it as the last email stated, we hope to have more details before your memberships run out so you can make a more informed decision. Thank you for patience."

Nice to see they read the forum.

So that means we'll get an update from GS within the next 30 days...lol

....we have not finalized what GameSalad Direct will be....

    ....

    !

It's no wonder they keep quiet..as when they DO actually communicate something, it's as worrying/vague as that statement.

    ho-hum

Ye, I re-read that part of the email a couple of times.

    That IS odd.

    Doesn't this:

...GameSalad Direct will help bring more power, more control, and more freedom to independent game designers than ever before...

    kinda contradict this:

...we have not finalized what GameSalad Direct will be...

I mean, how do they know it will revolutionize app development if they haven't even decided on what IT will be? Pretty strange to still have this much uncertainty surrounding a product that has been "released" for over a week...

    Come on guys.
Get your act together. We all love your software...but as time marches on, I'm having less and less faith in anything you do!

And I hate to say that, I really do.
