I just had to make a post about this...

Dear Gamesalad,

Thank you for listening to your customers and changing your mind on the royalties direct crap. I'm glad you guys changed it, and now I can finally go back to building my games!

I'm happily back with Gamesalad yayaya! Hopefully the community will become tight again and I can't wait until QS gets his pause button just so he is finally happy :p

If you haven't already heard the good news then check out this link "http://gamesalad.com/blog/2010/10/29/a-message-to-the-gamesalad-community/"

YAY ILL TELL EVERYBODY AT CORONA!
  • I really do appreciate that Gendai Games listened to their users and decided to change things. Very cool of them to do that when they did not have to.

It sucks that so many people talked TONS trash about them, denounced their loyalty, left (feverishly burning bridges) and now are talking about how much GS is awesome.

Yeah I know. I can see where the anger came from, but I really didn't like it when people wished that Gamesalad would fail as a company just because of an announcement. Its not like most of them are making stellar apps anyways.
  • Exactly. It's a shame that people can support something when it goes their way, so angrily wish spite on it when it does something they don't agree with, and then want to embrace it again.

I agree that some took it a little far with the GS bashing. But I also think that most of the shame falls squarely on Gendai/GameSalad's shoulders. Battery is dying so I'll try and make this quick.

Gendai made a very poor business move. Period. That it took them this long to change their minds says a lot about the company; unfortunately, it's not good. The other thing that pissed me/us off so bad is that they dropped this HUGE bomb and then failed to communicate exactly what that move actually involved. Instead, they sat back made little/no attempt to keep us from making negative assumptions and speculating. THAT caused the majority of their problems. If they had been upfront and said, "We'e thinking about trying something new. We want to help our existing customers and attract new ones by offering a publishing service. We will have to charge a per app submission fee and we're looking at a rev-share model. Not sure what the pricing/costs will be, but we have to keep the lights on somehow. Please give us your feedback on what would be fair. By the way, here's a list of all of the benefits for you if you use us to publish your apps:
    1...2..3..4..ect.".

They never really built out that benefits statement in my opinion. They just said you get everything you get now...except you lose the ability to publish your own apps, you have to wait through 2 approval processes, you pay us TWICE, you can't make white-label apps for clients, you can't update your old apps once the new model kicks in, you can't self publish titles later that you originally published with GSD. That's a whole lot of cons without GameSalad mentioning any pros. A few in the community saw a glimmer of silver lining the clouds, but even those "pros" were pretty subjective.

I do think it's funny how some here have gone from day to night back to day again so quickly...
  • There is no way you can say they just "sat back and did nothing". They could have been working frantically to try and come up with a solution to make everyone happy. Those types of decisions do not have instantly. For people to ASSUME such a thing is just as bad as whey they did.

Some would argue, "well, they should have said SOMETHING to let us know they were listening!" They could have, but to do something like that before any official decision has been made is a bad business practice. Nobody would have liked to hear, "We are listening. We will address your concerns." and then them come back and say, "we are going ahead with GS direct as planned."
