Game with several screens?

My game has many screens as part of an adventure story. Is there another way to do this than making scene after scene for each section of the adventure? I am getting really bad performance when I try to use more than a few scenes. I was thinking about having events spawn new actors which would be new backgrounds for each section of the adevnture. Any tips would be appreciated.

Yeah I am on 0.6, I love it. I do have my images at 72dpi but I think maybe my audio files are bogging things down possibly. I am going to play around some more, I am still learning for sure.
