Who's been deleting my tags?!

I was using this link...

http://gamesalad.com/forums/tags.php?tag=photics

...to quickly find threads that I started or somehow involve me. Isn't that's what tags are for?

Heh... I see someone's deleting my tags again. Do I have to write a script to put them back automatically?

That is genius If i must say. I have seen other forums that give you a list of topics you've replied to. I wish GS had that.

Heh, interesting tactic... now someone's been adding a "photics" tag to threads. It looks like approximately 60 more than usual. Of course, I can't remove tags that I didn't place.

I don't know if I should complain, as I do like seeing my name in nice big letters in the tag-cloud.
  • PhoticsPhotics Member Posts: 4,172
OK, so it's one of the following...

magic101hi, tenrdrmer, TheMoonwalls, tshirtbooth, mzx, artonskyblue, GamersRejoice, MikeQuinn, dejohnny2, TunzaGames, hdeanda, SingleSparq, xyloFUN, laxking97, AppArcade, tdis, kirk1234, ToastKitten, rickdal, Freztino, jonmulcahy, dmcdowell

...and probably a Sous Chef is involved... which I think would be good reason to have such a title stripped.

If a tag doesn't match what the thread is about, it should be removed. That would be well within the guidelines for a sous chef.

    1) If I'm posting in the thread, and I started the thread, I think that's a good reason for a tag.

    2) It's not my fault you picked bbPress. I wouldn't need to tag my threads if you were using something like vBulletin.

    3) If a Sous Chef is going to remove many of my tags at once, they should state why.

    4) Adding tags deliberately to obscure my tags is not fitting of a Sous Chef. You can go check your database to find out the origin of that.
  • dmcdowelldmcdowell Member Posts: 128
A tag should reflect what the thread is about -- not who started it, or who posted in it, or who anything else. Tags are for everyone's use -- to be able to find threads of a similar topic. Tags are not for individual users' personal preferences. I agree that it would be a nice feature to be able to view all posts from an individual member. In the meantime, you might want to simply bookmark the threads that interest you. Thank you.

I really don't think a Sous Chef is adding "Photics" tags to other topics.
And I'm not even sure a Sous Chef is deleting yours. Because, to me, none of them would just delete them and doesn't even answer to this topic. They would at least say something.

And don't blame them for not using vBulletin. It is not that they can't pay for it. There must be a good reason that we are not aware of...

Are you kidding me? A tag is a tag. If you don't like people tagging threads, as intended by the tool, simply remove the tag cloud. Are people actually clicking the big "GameSalad" tag to find all the threads about GameSalad? Are people clicking the "App" tag on a regular basis? I doubt it. There's probably only one tag that's being used as much as I use the "Photics" tag... and that's the "ontheappstore" tag. Maybe you should bookmark that tag and delete the tag cloud.

    Sounds silly doesn't it?

The layout of the forums is backwards. You have yellow stickies that often get ignored... simply because there are too many of them and many never leave.

    Here's some education for you...

I'm using the tool the way it is intended. Is that's your official statement, that I shouldn't be using tags for tagging?

It would have to be a moderator of some-sort, as regular visitors to this forum don't have the option to delete tags — except their own.

How does my use of the "Photics" tag hinder anyone else from using tags?

When you can easily find information that covers eight months, I think it is a big issue. A tag-cloud is one of those weird Web 2.0 things that people put on their websites, but don't really know why. Well, I know how they work. That's my job to know. So, I use the tool as it was intended.

Instead of discouraging my use of the tags, maybe people should encourage it. I look at it from reverse, would I object to an Orbz or Tshirtbooth tag? That would be pretty silly.

Instead of flooding the forums with yellow stickys, tags could be used.
  • dmcdowelldmcdowell Member Posts: 128
No, I am not kidding you. The tags on this forum really aren't just for your use. Other people use them. If the tag cloud on the main forum included dozens or hundreds of other usernames because each user went around tagging every thread that interested them, every thread they started or posted on, etc -- it would be a big mess. Tags should be used for indicating what the thread is about. If it's not about you, don't tag it with your username. Sure, there are plenty of one-off situations where an incorrect or inappropriate tag might not be removed, but it's very obvious when a person's username is on the front page of the forums in the tag cloud, that someone is tagging a whole lot of threads with their name. Even if it's simply for your own convenience and not for self-promotion or ego boost, it's not the intended use of the tags on this forum. Thank you.

The tag cloud is not supposed to be unlimited. It picks the popular tags. Is that what this is about? Is this because my tag is popular. Fine... if I'm too popular I don't have to stay here.

The forums have been pretty negative lately anyway. When I have to fight to defend my tags, it tells me that I should be focusing on my apps. It's more productive.

Erm ... You are popular because you write your own name on threads?

Seriously though, the tag clouds picks the most commonly used tags, your name is there not because people want it there but because you tag every thread you post.

Except the other things, tags become very handy when a search engine crawler gets into the website. It is a SEO trick. Tags mostly used for search engine listings rather than "for users". At least it used to be before. I used them..

ok , I just wanted to chime in here.

    1) I did not touch the tags, Way to much work :)
    2) I get why you do it Photics, however i dont agree with it. This is why
    - if all of the top posters did the same as you then the most popular tag list would be nothing but usernames.
Rather then tags you could add all your threads to your favourites list (to the right or your post) this way you can find them at any time.

    cheers

pretty sure your names in the tag thing

And the fact that tshirtbooths name is in the main page tag cloud represents the real use of the tags. People see his posts as useful and so they tag them, not tagging himself for his own reference or ego.

That's the stupidest thing I have heard. Just look at the GS Direct announcement's tags! Those are WAY off-topic, and they weren't removed.....

Get a REAL forum software, such as phpBB or MyBB so users can actually find their posts. If I post a thread and can't find it, then I assume that it has been deleted. REAL forum software also has user-friendly posting AND a REAL PM system.

    Thanks.

If i want to follow a thread, i either subscribe to it, or grathe rss feed.

I agree that not being able to find your old posts sucks, but putting your username as a tag is really streching it to fit your needs

If we had phpBB or MyBB I could FINALLY implement my master plan and start FINALLY making money!

(And I thought I only had the new splash screen to blame. Silly me!)

and I am working on a new game... Tags Your It! or Hey Hey...Shoe Shoe Stay Off of My Tag Cloud...
1st you enter your name and I store it in an attribute... then you do an endless platform jumper... if you successfully land on a cloud...the game tags it with your name... if you get 1000 tags... you win!
(of course if you fall, some big shot deletes all your tags... and I delete the attribute)
