What constitutes the term HD in a game?

I see a lot of games with HD tacked on the end of the title. Why? What is the reasoning behind this? I'm just a little confused by it seeing as how it isn't really possible for the game to actually be in high definition. I'm curious to hear your point of view on the matter.

It's a standard convention used to differentiate iPad games from their iPhone counterpart. Doesn't really mean anything.

But it gives you a new name, and lets you charge again for the app.
You also generally need to add new content or Apple will reject it.

So that's just what people are used to? What if I did something like:

"Example" for the iphone and "Example GX" for the ipad would that work too? Or would it be better to follow the convention?

A recent exception would be id Software's Rage. There are 2 iPhone releases; 1 is HD, the other is not. The HD version just has higher-res graphics for the Retina Display compatible devices.
