Subversion for the Mac

About fifteen years ago, I was working on a project and lost six months of work. I vowed never to let that happen again. I save like crazy. I save every few minutes. Every time I add an actor or a behaviour, I change the file name and save again. Then, I use Time Machine to back up to an external disk drive. Every week, I do a weekly backup with SuperDuper!to yet another external disk drive.
Every so often, I wonder whether a subverion client (like Versions or Cornerstone) would help. I've never done more than wonder because they are a bit pricey for me. I know next to nothing about subversioning. From what I can piece together, it is a tool for programmers who work in a team. For someone like me, who works alone, I don't know what it would offer over and above what I'm already doing in my workflow.
Is there anyone here familiar with subversioning? How does it work? Is it worth investigating?
How do you backup? What is your backup strategy?
