Do you have recommendations for game optimizations?

Hi guys,
my game is very simple! A handful of jpg images and 16 actors (7 of then can change visibility via manipulation of the alpha value).
The rest serves more or less as buttons
I've set the scene background to white (to match my game art) and disabled scrolling.
My iMac is last years model, 27" screen and i5 processor. Not many apps are running while i work with GS. Small stuff like email etc ...
Working with GS slows down and within 5 minutes of tweaking stuff, it takes 20 - 30 seconds to switch between windows (like from attributes to testing)
Since my actors do very little (as far as motion is concerned) and need no physics ability, i'm wondering what else i could turn off in order to speed up the work flow?
Any suggestions?

i admire those who work on HUGE games with tons of assets.
What I do (for now) is work on the tricky stuff first (such as adding rules) and then import the pictures last. Restarting every 15 - 20 minutes helps a bit as well .... me thinks!
Let's hope GS releases an update but I'm not holding my breath for a quick fix because i suspect the a substantial rewrite would be needed to tame the beast
