Ok, so its been an awful lot of months since I last did something new for this game. But I'm now back on it...
Firstly, check out the below video which shows a new addition to the game a top down view which will be used at times to vary the gameplay mixing the 360 degree swipeable room puzzles with this cool top down view.
Bit of a step away from other classic point and click adventures and really mixing two game styles together.
If can get it working and if I feel its worth it (BIG IF), i might have it so if you play landscape you get this top down view, if its portrait you get the swipe able first person view...(very much just an idea at the moment).
The top down view will allow for the addition of 'The Doctor' to run away from, hide in the dark, collect items and move around the asylum to different rooms...e.g. the lift, padded cells, room with electric chair, beds/wards, boiler room, etc etc...
Quite pleased with the torch light effect.
(Speaking quietly/softly in video so I don't wake the rest of the household..wife and baby).
Just watched the video. As point&click adventure games fan, I'll say that you should keep the original way - I don't think that mixing genres is a good idea. But I'm really curious, how it looks in actual game.
Looks cool, personally I rather like the idea of genre mix up. It's like the over world or something. You could pull out your map and shine your flashlight on it to navigate your way. Very cool possibilities here. Good work.
Thanks GamersRejoice, hopefully it will work out for the best.
At MoonWalls, I know it could change the game from potentially a cool point and click adventure to some annoying mix of good point and click ruined by some faster paced top down arcade gameplay.
Hopefully it will have a similar feel between the views, by not giving the player any weapons or anything, the top down view will still be very much a chilled problem solving area with some fear generated from the torch light effect (you never know whats behind you). Its also a way to move around a large building without long loading times between scene after scene as you slowly try and make your way back to a room that you know you need to take an item to.
We shall see, if it makes the game less cool I'll ditch it and make the top down view a template on my site.
I was thinking about your new idea Jon, and I think that if you do it right, it can be awesome. I think that you should mix two ideas - from the game I told you in the earlier post (Infinight: A Thrilling Light-Based Adventure with Multiplayer!), and a map from 1112 (I'm not sure if it is still available after the new update, but you can see that in the trailer).
I think that you should make this part, only as a addition to the entire game (and not two games in one).
And the most important part - point&click adventure games fans don't like any types of arcade, or fighting (I'm talking about normal fighting, like in action games; not about puzzles that involves fighting). So you shouldn't add this to your top view parts.
It's pretty late, so my english is much worse, but I've hope that you can understand me
As you've seen on one of my other posts I've been working on the top down setup.
Got slightly side tracked as whilst perfecting the setup I thought I'd try and make a few bucks selling it as a top down shooter template on my site. I want to get it to a pretty high level before I make it available...
It all helps though as the better I make it the better it will be for Dark Asylum..
Though I won't need any of the guns for Dark Asylum...just a torch light I think...
great...probably not the best time to check out the darkest fear website and video before I go to sleep...ah well....whats the worst that could happen..
huh! whats that!
Aaaaaaaaaah! no! no! get away! the light! the weird buzzing noise !!!!! Aaaaaaaah!!!!

An evening working on the game...lots of tinkering to do before I start churning through the game.
Created a nice visual telling the players to wear headphones and play alone in the dark. Added a positional sound (whispering children's song) which moves from left to right.
So very much to do...here's hoping I stick to it to get the first version out before Christmas...

Academic Year Planner? Are you a student? What are you studying?
:-) ... nope not a student...not anymore...back in 2001 I was graduating from a degree in illustration and animation.
My wife decided I needed a calendar in my "office" to make me look more professional...its only just now time to start filling it in.... maybe I'll do a dot for a dark asylum launch...
Would be a good space for post it notes to plan out game puzzles...

currently working on a big revamp of my website....
then hopefully get back on this...
The whole game/story/puzzles are all worked out. But its a huge game for a single developer if I want to finish it as best I can.
Tonnes of art work to create....thats the job that keeps putting me off...doing the Gamesalad rules and stuff I find to be the fun rewarding bit.
Either I'll finish it as intended or rework the story/gameplay to make it a bit shorter....but it would be a shame.
Considering, getting a loan (to pay the bills mortage), taking some major leave from work and working on this full time for a month.
you and your crazy hipnotic chants...

Great game, and I think that it can give you some nice ideas.

A bit of better knowledge of GameSalad and it was glaringly obvious what was wrong...
Nice how the mind works sometimes.
Its very tempting to rebuild from the start with smarter rules (although it was pretty good 1st time round I think...)
