iPad dimensions help regarding sizes

Hi,
i have added a LOT of stuff to my little app and am curious if I can use all of the 1024 x 768 pixel space?
I notice that when I fire up my app, that it covers the whole screen and to exit, I press the menu button just like on the other apps.
But all the other apps have stuff displayed at the top such as time and battery usage etc ...

So, can I use all the space or do I need to leave room for something?

    Gamesalad don't allow you to display the battery status or date... So you can use all the iPad screen space (768x1024)

    OK so I don't need to leave that bland strip at the top?
