Art direction

So I'm getting close to finishing up my game prototype and I'm a little up in the air with the art direction for my game. So my game takes place in space and I've currently been working on the artwork as fairly realistic looking. But I've noticed that a lot of games and very successful games use more of an illustrative look. What do you prefer and do you think one from the other influences more sales?

Hi GamersRejoice, it's perhaps not easy or might even bemeaningless to try to gauge the sales on one particular aspect of a game, including graphics, in my opinion. And anyway, providing you're photographic graphic elements are stylish, I can't see any worries.

Stuff goes in waves as well. A particular style of game design might be the flavour of the month and by the time you've made your game, it could be something else. I'd stick to your guns but if you're really still worried, maybe try Photoshop filters to make them cartoonified or "artistically effected".

    :-)

That's a very good point. I'm probably just over thinking this, thanks for the input.
