Animation performance issue

So when I collide with this object an animation plays with 3 images
img1=20kb img2=37kb img3=61kb all image dimensions are 448x448 & png24

When the animation plays the first time on a level, the game pauses/freezes for a second to load in the frames. Do the images need to be smaller than they are currently?
I swear I've used larger images and longer animations in 0.8.9 with less performance lag?

    Well I got around it without changing the images. I created 3 instances off screen with 1 image on each instance. So it loads the images into memory straight away without animating them. This has stopped it pausing/freezing when loading the animation when it's needed.
