is this a good "technique" for a sidescroller?

basically i make the level. in this case a beach.
i went on photo shop and made the beach stage. sand palmtress sky and ground. a big 2000 pixels wide and 480 tall png file.
i imported to gamesalad and placed INVISIBLE actors on the sand parts of the beach image to act as the ground for my character to walk on. so when my character lands os said invisible platforms, it will look as if he's landing on the sand
i set the character to "control camera" like most of us do with sidescrollers. (at a fixed resolution mind u, duh)
the game plays perfectly fine. i run to the right and left and the camera just follows me with the "beach" in the background and all. the png files is only like 213k and gamesalad doesnt seem to have issues with this large file. is this a good system to go by? i figured its easier than to make objects pop up at certain locations. i figured its easier to have one big ass image as the background and just "mold" invisible platforms into the canvas lol not sure how it will effect the game overall and ram. i think it might be fine tho. not sure however. POSITIVE THINKING!
NOTE: i did notice however, when i try to make the stage 2500 pixels wide (500 pixels wider than the original idea which is 2000 pixels wide), gamesalad didn't like it.. it displayed all white instead of colors and stuff.. maybe its my version (0.8.4). not to worry since 2000 pixels is enough.
what you guys think?
