Very basic iPad Question !?

Hi there

I have knocked together a test thing in GameSalad - and have an iPad . . . . so far so good.

I have also download the GameSalad Viewer, but I am clueless as to what I do with it, I want to preview the project on my iPad, but GameSalad Viewer comes with zero instructions . . . not even a read me text file.

Do I install it on my iPad, my iMac, within GameSalads folders structure . . . ? I really don't have a clue how to even start to get it working ?

Any clues very welcome.

GameSalad folks should really include at least basic instructions !! This is silly !

You will need to install the GS Viewer onto your iPad through Xcode.

To do that, you must be a registered member of the iPhone Developer Program (which costs 99$/year).

Here is a video that Tshirtbooth made to help get you started:

    Cheers for the reply firemaplegames.

I watched the video, it was - to me - a stream of dense, esoteric and cryptic information that assumes you know what most of the terms are that are thrown- one after another - at you at ever increasing speed while watching an entirely unfamiliar screen flash back and forward like a cat stuck in a box.

    : )

I am not stupid (well not too stupid) - but this might be of some use to someone well versed in the whole process, but it's beyond me, I'll conclude that previewing a game on a real iPad is not something available to most people.

Thanks for your reply anyhow, genuinely appreciated.

Yeah, the Apple side of things is extremely complicated. It gets a little easier the more you do it, but it never makes compete sense.

Testing on the device is critical however. Using the preview in GameSalad is fine for testing logic, but it is important to see how performance is on an actual device. It varies quite dramatically. These devices have severely limited RAM and processor power, unlike your computer which has oodles of both.

    @Tynan

oh the nicest thing about the video... is that pause button... you watch it once... then you go through it again and hit that pause at each step of the way...

of course the terminology is confusing... programming is a language... and this is a new one for you... as it once was for all the rest of us... we learned it and so will you!

Apple is very complicated as FMG says...

--on the Apple Developer site you create and store and download:

the certificates (1 developer; 1 iOS developer) ... identifying you and the computer you are working on... thus protecting your consummers.

then for each app you create:

a provisioning profile development: sets-up your app info (provisions that you define for that particular app)

a provisioning profile distribution: associates the payment aspects for the sale of your app (so you get the money)

When you publish in GS you associate the distribution profile with your project.

    -- finally in iTunesConnect:

you add your app and the info to be displayed in the appStore

take your time... don't be hard on yourself... you will succeed!

Thanks MotherHoose & firemaplegames - for your replies.

I appreciate that proofing on an actual iPad is essential - especially with the touch screen/accelerometer, I just expected the process to be a little less daunting (for me at least).

"Pause button" - good advice. I suppose in an ideal world there would be three or four videos that initially explain the overarching concept/s - then go on to slowly drag idiots like me through them one at a time.

The video here seems to hit the ground running, and hit it pretty hard (my feet hurt watching it) - before we have even started we are logging into iPhone Dev Centre - something I have never heard of, have no clue what it might be or how to log it or why I might be logging in . . .

To be honest I am not really complaining about anything other than my own shortcomings, but hey, I might get there one day, I'll just concentrate on designing my game to start with and simple use a keyboard for control for the present.

Cheers for the info both of you.

    Tynan,
I just stumbled across this thread, and wanted to reassure you that there's new videos coming soon. Tshirtbooth and I have been working on getting some instructions on dealing with the process with Apple videoed and put up, but they're gonna be a bit longer. I apologize for the delay - we just have so many different tutorials we want to make, we can't get every one up right away.

Please bear with us just a bit longer!

    Thanks,

    M.
