There was a board game that I used to play when I was younger that is no longer made because the company that used to make it got bought out and they company that did the buying out has itself been bought out. Do you think there would still be copyright issues? The game is just crying out to be recreated on the iPad.

If it were you would you approach the company in question now and see if they would be interested?

Yes, I would approach them. What do you have to lose? Even if they say no it doesn't change the legality of you making it without their consent.

Also, Protip: 99.99999999% of the people on here are not out to steal your ideas. Being intentionally obscure does no one any good

Okay, fairdoos!! I take your point FreshlyMinted. Well the game is Tank Command, it came out in 1975 and (as far as I know) it still isn't being made.

I have, however, contacted Mattel to ask their permission but the process can take 8 weeks or so. I guess I'll just crack on with it, although it is proving a little bit difficult to say the least. The worst bit is random numbers only appearing once!!

Why not just make a similar game and name it different? I wouldn't expect to get permission to use the name unless they are going to get a cut.

I was thinking about that, but then at the moment this is a hobby for me, not a money making exercise. I have a day job that pays fairly well so I am not in a rush to make a fortune from iPod/iPad games.

On top of that, if they do allow me to sell the game (even for a cut) I can always go round blagging that I designed an iPad game for Mattel!! :-)
