Best device for testing?

I'm looking into getting an iPod touch to test my games on and I'm wondering what you think would be the best version to get for testing purposes? I keep leaning towards new because, why would I spend money on an old device? Then I say well, "your games need to run well on older devices too!"

My first game I started working was for the iPad but seeing as how I don't have one and iPad 2 is going to come out pretty soon I am shelving that project for the moment. So it's iPod and iPhone games for me right now. Bigger market anyway.

I'd love some input from the wonderful community here. Thanks

Yeah, I test on a 2nd generation iPod touch. To be honest, it has similar Gamesalad performance to my iPhone 3G, so I think you can pretty much be confident that it will work on most IOS devices. As long as they're updated to the latest firmware anyway. As far as testing the high end, it would be ideal for you to have access to an iPhone4 so you can support Resolution Independence and all that good stuff.

I thought that the newest iPod Touch sported the Retina Display as well?

It probably does, heh. I don't really keep up to date on Apple products even though I own so many of them now lol.
