Does this mean that the city pictures i have downloaded from google (image search) belongs to me?? Can i use them in my game without worrying??
Got another cuestion... In the beginning of the project you have an options to build your project which says iphone portrait or landscape... What's the diference between landscape and portrait???
Google obviously just pulls the images from websites. So go to the site that the images belong to, and see if there is anything about usage on there.
If it's a photo of a cityscape, it might have been taken by a pro photographer who sells the images on his site, so might not be available for public use (for example)
Okay then - lets refine the question. If you photo manipulate a photo and add you own images / artwork / etc. into the photo . No faces are being used (don't have to worry about violated someones personal rights) can we use this "new" image in a game?
In an artistic sense, it's become something new. But you still used someone else's work to get to that final stage.(I guess it kind of depends on how much of the "original" is left)
It's a bit like sampling in music, it's ok to sample say, a note, or a drum. But when you sample a whole vocal, or a whole musical part, that's a different story.
(if that makes sense)
Of course, I'm no lawyer, so I could be talking total rubbish.
Nope, you can not use them.. You need permission from the author no matter how much of the image you use or manipulate. You can only use stock photography you bought, or if anyone offers you to use their pictures (commercially), for free, it's ok. (there's websites that offer photographs for free that may be used in commercial projects)
Of course you can use Googled images as inspiration to create your own (illustrate your own or combine pictures you took yourself), but in the end NOTHING of those googled images can be effectively used in your artwork.
But you can not use just any googled image and manipulate it until it can be called yours. There's no such thing as making it your own by manipulation. Dumb example, You could manipulate the image so drastically that it becomes 100% unrecognizable compared to the original. Which is pointless cause by then you've created your own image anyways ;-P
