is ARMv7 bad for business?

Well i've got my latest game just about finished up, and it pretty much plays like crap on my 3g but good on iphone4. Should I just bite the bullet and submit it as an ARMv7 only or is that really bad for sales?
I'm not sure it would be to bad. I have a friend who still has a 3g and he wont download any apps unless he absolutely has to, cause the phone is already substantially slower. and he says adding apps just makes it worse.

So whats your guys thoughts on this. I know there are lots of second gen devices still out there, but should I not sweat supporting them and move on?

If I cant get it running smooth it would be better than letting people buy it on older devices right? I mean I dont want bad reviews about how the game play sucks

Capitalize on the matter. Make your current version ARM7, then offer a reduced featured version of your game for ARM6 at a lower price tier.

iPhone OS 4.3 is going to be ARM7 only i think, they only support 3Gs and above, iPod 3rd gen and above, and the iPad.

if apple is dropping support, i wouldn't be too concerned. not with millions of new verizon people coming on board over the next year too.

what exactly is this ARMv7? or 6?
    what does it do?

ARMv7 and ARMv6 refer to the processors in the devices. iPod touch 2nd Gen and iPhone3G have ARMv6
All newer devices have ARMv7. When you check require ARMv7 when publishing you are setting it to only be downloadable by the newer device that use that processor.

whats the fps and memorry usage on the 3g like?
  • tenrdrmertenrdrmer Member, Sous Chef, Senior Sous-Chef Posts: 9,934
20-40FPS except for one scene it kills it down to like 5FPS but theres so much spawning going on its kinda expects. Them memory has never been above 20mb that I have seen but I also haven't sat and played it all the way through on the 3G. So that would prob be worse if I could stand the lagging and play through it.

have you thought about using Tshirt's method to detect what device the user is on, and then only adding certain features and extra spawns when they have a newer device?

No actually I hadn't thought out that. I'm to close now but that would have been a great idea.

is it possible to publish a game with arm6 ,then same game for arm7?
  • tenrdrmertenrdrmer Member, Sous Chef, Senior Sous-Chef Posts: 9,934
no but look through TSB's videos. he had a trick to tell what device the game was being played on. Look in hs videos not the cookbook videos.

I would vote in this poll if there was an "I have no idea" box ;-)

I personally don't think right now is an issue if your game is only arm7. Maybe a while back like six months ago.. But with the release of the new iphone 5 in the fall, a lot of the iPhones 3g are going to upgrade so I think you are good. Besides if a game doesn't run good on an older device you might scare the customer away when he wants to buy another game from you. That is just my two cents.

I tink it doesn't, because out of the 10 iphone/ipod touch owners I know only one has a 3GS. Hope your problem doesn't effect sales that badly.

well but if the device is running a lot of softwares then it might be different

anyway, maybe you should have two apps, one is arm6, and one arm7
