Should I finish what I started or switch

Hey guys,

So I've been working on this game for a while now. Was all hyped about it and then the GameSalad Direct thing happend and I got really put off by GS. I see now that they have fixed that problem. But in the meantime I dove deep into Corona and Unity. Between those two I really like Unity and plan on continuing to learn that platform. However, I've got this 90% done game sitting here on my drive. I really wanted to rewrite it in Unity but that's a LOT of work, plus as a 3D engine it's got a lot of complexities that I just don't need (yet). However, it does let me do some really slick things that I could only dream of in GS. I'm about 1/2 way in Unity to where my game is currently at in GS.

GS is really cool though. I don't plan on giving up on it, I'm just really impressed by Unity.

So what I need some advice on is this: Do I start over and redo my game in Unity or do I finish up what I've already got with GameSalad and just release a version 1.0 of my game and then go back to the drawing board with Unity for a 2.0 version?

Some of the stuff that I want to do is really frustratingly hard with GS. But at the same time, I've already done a lot of stuff that I'm sure would blow your minds if you saw it. I kind of want to finish what I started, but at the same time I hold myself to such exacting standards that I have a hard time releasing something that I don't consider to be awesome. And since my art skills are trash my game is mostly about awesome gameplay with so-so graphics.

The problem is that since playing with Unity I no longer consider what I made with GS to be awesome. I just consider it ok at best.

What to do? What to do? I'm kinda depressed about this and have lost my motivation.

So what do you think guys? Do you want to see me finish the game I've made in GS or does it make sense to start over and continue down the path of Unity? And why?

Bah... frustrated. :(

    Hey.

We're starting to see a lot of cool stuff being done in GameSalad now, people are really getting creative and within just over the year i've been using GS, the whole quality of the apps being built with this tool has increased ten fold. Of course, it depends on what you like for games but i've seen some very decent games come from GS and a fair bit of success from it, the obvious being tshirt's games, joe's and darrens. If your game is going to blow our minds as you say then im certain what you will be releasing is awesome! You've said your art skills weren't great so you played to your strengths and made awesome gameplay, thats what makes a good game! If you've nearly finished and already put that much effort into those frustratingly hard bits, then i think you owe it to yourself to complete the job you started. I've seen some cool stuff from you over here on GS, so either way im excited to see what you've come up with. Maybe a teaser trailer will get the reaction you need from this community to help give you that inspiration you need to finish.

    And remember, no1 likes a quitter ;)

Thanks guys, I see the polls are now leaning towards finishing in GS.

I would appreciate some constructive feedback as to Why you voted the way you did. Or any other opinions you have on the matter.

    Thanks

    Ps thanks beefy :)

If you're half way done in GS might as well finish it. Like beefy said gs keeps getting better anyways. I love Unity my self but as an artist I cant use Unity w/o programmer sadly. Have you looked at UDK? its an amazing tool as well. anyways just finish this game in gs and then maybe start new one in unity :)

    Thanks

    90% is a lot to re-do mate.
you might as well just get it finished before moving onto a new game/app

You're a very clever guy mate, and helped both myself and others out.

I'd love to see you *finish* something! So, for that reason alone, I hope you finish your game in GameSalad :)

    QS :D

I think you should submit version 1 with gamesalad, and then if it's quite successful (or not successful at all :)) then make an update to make it even better yet.
Kind of like the approach Joe took with secret of grisly manor

if i were you, being you are so far allready, might as well just finish it up and anything you need to change later do it on Unity

Basics of economics is you don't measure based on what you've already done, but on what you're willing to do to get what you want. You always make marginal decisions. So, would you rather build it in Unity or finish in GS...forget what was done already and measure from the margin only.

Don't release it with average graphics. If the concept is that good find someone who can make great graphics.

The overall question, whether using GS or Unity is: what will the player experience?

(I think some of us indie devs may think 'what does the game do' which is the wrong question to ask!)

For what it's worth, I would love to see what you were capable of in GS, then as an update, post back here as to how much cooler you made it in Unity. Eyes = open.
