If any of you guys out there create your own artwork what program do you use to do so. Im new to this whole game design thing, and im trying to make my own game. I do not however want to just drag and drop someone else's sprites and enviroment art and what not. I'd like to create my own to show my work and not someone elses's. Also if anyone could link me to some video's that explain thoroughly how to use this application that would be awsome. Or if someone could explain to me how exactly to use the templates. When I click on a template it just shows the scene and I don't really understand how im supposed to learn anything with no explanation. Thanks! =]

    Hey RipSiK,
I don't use other peoples templates so I can't help/advise you there but as far as gfx apps go, you have a few choices.
Right now, you can get SketchBook Express for free via the apple app store

For 2D drawing, photo manipulation work, you could look into:

The GIMP which is free and used by many
Pixelmator which is $29 and some change
Adobe PS Elements (not sure how much $$ but sometimes bundled for free with gfx tablets)
Adobe PS - Industry standard and standalone version is maybe $800ish
Adobe Illustrator - Industry standard and therefore costly

For 3D work you can check out:

    Blender3D - free
Cheetah3D - $149 in the apple app store
    Cinema4D - starting at $800ish - about $4000 for the studio version
Autodesk Maya - pro app and maybe most used for 3d assets and film
SideFX Houdini - about eight grand and a $99 poor artists version

But know that becoming proficient with any of the above applications can take years, especially the 3D apps which take a life time to master :)

google for open source graphics software if your budget is close to the freezing temperature ;)

Thanks alot, Yeah I have worked a little bit with illustrator in the past but im just looking into making some pretty basic 2D characters and a nice back ground enviroment. My games obviously going to be pretty basic but I just found all the actual video footage I need to learn some stuff; I wasn't paying too much attention to the threads at the top.

Believe me I know it can take a long time to learn how to use apps, I am going to school for graphic design and I totally understand it takes a life time to master any program. I learn something new everyday. Im going to take my time on my game because I want it to be successful and right now it's more of a hobby than really wanting to make it a job.

Popping out a game after like 6 months of playing with this program I believe in my eyes would just be like a huge waste of time. lol
