Spawning image on HUD

I feel like I'm flooding the forum tonight, but I have the night off from work so I'm spending some quality time with GS.

I cant seem to figure out how to spawn an image onto the HUD.
when my character moves over an object in the game I want it to add an extra life.

I used the wiki to do the display lives as an image, but I am having problems on the gain a life aspect of this.

so in a nut shell:
character moves over actor A.
Destroy actor A
Spawn image B in the HUD.

I was thinking about having the extra lives set as not visible and then some how changing them to visible when I walk over actor A.

any input is greatly appreciated!
