Did you find out about GameSalad by seeing the GameSalad splash screen or was it something else?

I saw it on Doodle destroy free. just happened to be trying to find a way to make games when I downloaded that game. Saw the old "Made with GameSalad" splash and the rest is history.

I saw the splash screen on olsonvox (blade Olson)'s jumpo. I looked it up and was instantly in love with the software.

I heard about the amazing story of the indie developer who made trism, and then I was really inspired to make my own games. I did a quick search on google for how to make an iPhone app, and then a few pages in I saw a link to gamesalad.

I googled 'make iphone games' nearly two years ago.

Why is the 'a friend told me about it' option not on the poll? Surely some have found it that way too?

That would be the second option.
It's basically Splash Screen vs. everything else.

I don't want to taint the poll, but I think it should be obvious why I created this thread.

I Googled for variations of "non coding" and "iPhone app" back in mid 2009 - didn't sign up at the time as my OS wasn't compatible, but yeah, Google.

I saw it on a blog originally & ignored it. At the time I wasn't thinking game development. Then I started to look at game development & saw it on the same blog.

    NINETY-FOUR PERCENT!

I think GameSalad can lose the splash screen for Professionals.

    I agree!

It seems that GameSalad would be better off by focusing on Organic / Paid Search, as Google is one of the most popular answers.

while I think there should be an option with no splash, 34 votes out of ~49k members is not even close to being an representative poll

I think it's a good poll. These are active members, the kind GameSalad wants to attract.

34 out of 2,117 is 1.6% of active members. That's a decent sample. It could be better, but I think that the results are reflective of reality.

how do we know that there are 49000 members?
A better indication is the forum here since the software caters to designers who sooner or later need help with something!
Photics also holds a clue since he (and I assume only he) has the number of book sales. THAT too would indicate how many are using the app.

Just because a software is downloaded x many times does not mean that it is actually used for production.

I downloaded it but didn't use until negotiations with a local designer were going nowhere.

    How did I discover GS?

I goggled and found a wordpress blog that listed 10 ways of making an iphone game. GS was listed as one of the candidates and the "no coding required" feature made me go get it!
The splash screen has the reverse effect :)

xyloFUN, check out the very last line on the webpage:

128,701 posts in 16,832 topics over 25 months by 2,117 of 48,973 members.

that tells us that only .069% of GS users responded to this poll.

now that just everyone who's downloaded and installed the application, let's say just 10% actually build an app, that's just under 5k, which would put about .6% of gamesalad members responded to the poll.

if you look at how many people post on the forums, 2117, only 1.6% of members posted on the poll.

either way, this is not the way to go about asking for change. the forums blew up when GS: Direct was announced, there was so much activity going on it was crazy. Compared to that, no one really cares about the splash screen.

That's the worst part in all of this. GameSalad somehow thinks that the screen has to be there to attract customers. It actually has a negative effect, building an association with lousy games.

It's not asking for change. It's an intervention! GameSalad has a marketing problem. This thread shows that Google — not the splash screen — is where the majority of customers find out about GameSalad.

With so many members no longer active, is it safe to assume that they have "moved on"?

As far as the splash goes, I care! My apps are not games so the reference to games is odd as it is.

I googled about tools for making iPhone apps back in 2008, saw Gamesalad, purchased a Macbook Pro and the rest is history! :)

I saw GameSalad at a booth at the GameOn! convention in Austin at The Mohawk back in September. It was during the GS Direct debacle so they were just there spreading the word, and a few weeks later they released 0.9.0 and I started working with it, liked it, and I still like it. Could it be improved? Sure.. but there will never be a time when that wont be the case.

Read an article in a mac magazine in tesco about a year ago and downloaded soon after!

I'm not sure how many active users gs has, but I reckon it's a minority who actually post on the forum.
