Hi Everyone,
Just joined and started using Gamesalad this past week. I'm not a programmer, never learned C or anything like it, so I really like how easy it is to make progress with GS. Many thanks and big kudos to all those (i.e. tshirtbooth) who made video tutorials. I've watched a bunch and they are very helpful.
I have a few questions.
1. I read past discussions from other users wanting to be able to generate android code. Although I agree that iphones are the dominant player, I think the good folks at GS should seriously consider also generating Android code. They are quickly gaining market share and will be a big player. It would certainly increase our available customers if we could offer games on both platforms. So, I'd like to hear from GS if they are now considering the possibility. Can someone from GS address this?
2. There was one series of videos where it looked like there was supposed to be 15, and I found the first 10 or so, but nothing after that. Does anyone know if there are any more videos to that series? I think it was called creating a game from scratch.
3. I've read through the wiki and the references info, but there are some things that I still need. Is there any more detailed info on how to best use the physics properties? I'm trying to figure gravity issues. i.e. an actor is falling, I touch and move the actor back to the top of the screen and then they fall again, but this time they drop faster than before. Why would that be? and how can I adjust the fall rate for the second fall?
I'm looking forward to learning a lot here. I'm probably the oldest here, so be patient with me if I seem a little slow.
Thanks!
Roderic

2. When were they released?
3. Try the unofficial gamesalad textbook or you can post the questions on the forums.
Oh and welcome
Cheers.
I'm not from GS, but I can give you my $0.02
The Android market is certainly an interesting one, but I think that ios shits on it from a great height.
Why, you ask?
Well, as far as I can tell:
1. You have no unified account (itunes in ios terms) with Android. Every time you buy something, you have to put in your payment details e.g. credit card number. Hardly conducive to impulse buying!
2. There's a lot of fragmentation in the Android Market - multiple handsets with varying peformance capability and a plethora of screen sizes. IOS has a maximum of three right now - iphone, retina display and iPad. Unless GS offered dynamic screen size adjustment, then it's a lot of work to get a game onto every device perfectly.
3. Testing: Because of the fragmentation, testing on all devices could end up being hugely expensive. Additionally, Android handsets are largely underpowered when compared to IOS devices, which means we'd have to make simpler games.
4. Again with the un-unified account thingy, the carriers themselves decide when to push out updates. These may vary, whereas all apple devices can receive an update on the same day from Apple.
5. Sales: I've heard two reports from GS users (granted, not a huge test group!) that sales are rubbish. This is in part due to Android owners being more tech savvy, and therefore more likely to know how to pirate software. Sales from Joe's Grisly manor are upwards of 80k on iPhone. On Android, his sales are round 100 units. It doesn't look very inviting from where I'm sitting.
6. Finally, GS needs to man up and give us social features. There's little point putting games out on yet another new platform that might be hindered because of these features being missing. Personally, I'd rather have a 'complete' game on one platform, than an incomplete game on multiple platforms!
Enjoy your stay!

it seems your questions have been answered...
I'd recommend getting hold of the unofficial textbook, it really is well written and I keep opening up for random tips now and again, even after reading it through once fully.
Welcome to the forum..

I'll just add my 2 cents about Android. For gaming, it's not going to be that much of a market. Most statistics compare the Android phone system to iPhone, but they leave out the iPod users.
Think about the iPod touch... about the hottest gaming device there is... and it's only been out for a relatively short time. And as young folks get older and move to mobile phones, I seriously doubt they will like the Android. I think that Androids more aimed to people who just want a phone and navigation apps, etc. (And people who have deep seated issues with Apple)
As said, Android is so unwieldy because there are many resolutions and devices, unlike Apples unified control. Also, the lack of quality checks and controls on the Android market make it a haven for spam and crap apps.
Android is not the way for GS to go IMO.
