A couple of questions from a newbie

Hello all;

I am very new to GS and somewhat new to programming (although I realize GS is not programming (thank heavens for that)). GS looks amazing and from playing with the demo for a few hours I can see it has a heck of a lot to offer especially for a free program and is very easy to learn.

I have a couple of questions I hope you can help me with.

1. After playing with the demo I cannot find a way for a user to enter there name (or other info) into a GS game and then use that info back at them. I think once the info has been entered I can use an attribute to get it back out, but how to get it into GS?

2. A couple of the things I want to do with GS are not games but utilities, will I have any trouble publishing via GS if it is not a game?

3. Testing, I know Apple requires us to test on a real device and then state what iOS versions we have tested with. I am going to be getting an iPhone4 and iPad soon. Will I have trouble downgrading iOS on the devices and then upgrading again, so I can test on different versions of it?

Thanks in advance.

    1. check the demos sticky, there is a keyboard demo, its a hack as GS does not support the built in keyboard yet, but it works.

    2. i've made things that are not really games, as long as you can make it, you can publish it.

    3. you won't be able to downgrade iOS versions on either device, some of the older devices has back ways of doing it, but it was a huge pain and not worth it. it's more important to test on the hardware anyways, the iOS version really won't have much impact.

    Hey Jon;

    Thanks for the info. I realize what your saying about the hardware, but when I when I look at the app store all of the apps list the iOS version they have been tested on. So if I get a new iPhone and iPad your saying I can't downgrade iOS and can only test on the current iOS version, so I can't state theat my games work on anything other than the newest (current) iOS version. Is that correct? It seems awfully limiting as far a development and trying to appeal to a wide audience.

    because of jailbreaking, whenever apple comes out with a new version, like right now 4.2.1 is out, they shut down the verification servers for previous versions.

    if you've jailbroken in the past and saved your SHSH blobs, you can spoof the verificaiton server, but that is a pain

    It only says only the app store that an app is iOS 4.0 tested or not

    Thats just something apple asks if you certified it works on iOS 4.0.

    if you use some backup SHSH software then you can downgrade. Example:Tiny Umbrella

    OK, I think I get it, thanks.

    So when someone states on the app store that a game requires iOS 4.0 or later I guess that means they have not tested with anything earlier.
