Image Size Issue

I have backgrounds which are 960x640 and when I bring them into GS they appear much smaller (like 115x76). Why is this happening? Also I have resolution independence on.

    Can somebody please help with this its so frustrating.

    Open with preview and then change size then for the resolution change to 72
