THE 'TRYING TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX' 2 WEEK PROJECT CONTEST!!!

A contest to push little ideas, to make that weird game idea you've had, to learn some new areas of GameSalad you have perhaps never tried and a chance to make a little beautiful game that in 2 weeks time you can be proud of.

FREE PROFESSIONAL VIDEO MONTAGE SLOT FOR YOUR GAME:
All those that take part will appear in a full blown animated video. I work as a full time animator/video editor and I'll put the video together myself showcasing each game. In a style similar to this: (...www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfLLufhC0Rg...)

The other prizes available are amazing, such as 'satisfaction', 'joy', 'achievement', 'notoriety' and 'money'.

Would anyone care to join me?

PROJECT RULES

The game has to have something original but simple..
...
It has to be good... (unless the style of the game is supposed to be rubbish, in which case it is allowed)
...
Have a good amount of polish. Sounds, buttons, graphics. Not half finished...but beautiful..
...
You have to register your game name, before announcing it, so no one steals it.
...
You have to share your developer story, on this thread as your project unfolds.
...
You don't have to make it available as a web game, as I worry that people will steal the project.
...
You have to submit it to Apple on the 21st of February 2011. (in 2 weeks time, unless you inevitably get carried away)
...
All those that add their developer story here will be eligible to go into the 3d animated video I'll make after the contest.
...

I'll post details about my game project tomorrow...(once I figure it out a bit more in my head...I've got the name...and I've got the game control idea)..

Dude, I would LOVE to do this! But I can't! I have a game to finish!

Sorry man - I know it wasn't on purpose, but more than two weeks notice might have helped!

    Looking forward to it!

@stormy - is there any reason it has to be in two weeks? Could this not be our two week notice of the competition to start in two weeks that will ask you to make a game in two weeks?

Hang on, I feel a vid coming on:

Cool, a few takers already. At crazy fish you can still join in, just give yourself 2 weeks to make an awesome web game before publishing it on gamesalads website.

Also as a little teaser. My game is an artist based idea, sort of . . .

@Qs if you want I'll start another competition but I won't say when until the actual day to stop anyone getting a cheeky headstart. Maybe if your really lucky I'll start one in 2 weeks. Maybe a monthly contest with a monthly video made each time? Let's see how well this one goes first.

I just LOVE this idea. I was too excited when peachpellen mentioned a "48-hours game challenge" idea. But, unfortunately she limited it for corona only. (But, promised a GS one too.)

    http://techority.com/2011/01/13/techority-48-hour-challenge/

    ----

    I have a few things to say;

-If the challenge was something like "48-hours challenge" it would be so much easier for everyone to participate. Because everybody has their own project going on and 2 weeks is a long time to stay away from the "main" projects. But a shorter time would be awesome. (The quality will be lower, yes. But, imo, it would be a LOT more fun!)

-Thanks to TSB for kind offer. But, if we can pile more prize up, this will be a hell of an exciting challenge. At peachpellen's challenge, Carlos, Co Founder of Corona, is giving a full year subscription to the winner. If we can get some "yellow-post-guys" to interest in this, I'm sure a lot more people would want to participate. (I'm not saying "give a pro membership to the winner". But, something from GS team would be cool.

-And I think there should be a "main concept" a "theme" for the games, like in the GlobalGameJam. This years theme was "Extinction" in the GGJ. This way, we can be sure the games were made just for the challenge, and, not before. (And, this too makes the challenge more fun imo.)

That's it for now. I'm looking forward for what's ahead! :D

I will give the winner a video review of the game on my channel :)

    http://www.youtube.com/Weswog

    Cheers, Weswog
  • I'm not as experienced as most people here but I'd be up for taking part as I think I've got pretty decent idea and I'm on holiday for the next 2 weeks starting tomorrow.

Great. It seems the contest was launched only a few hours before the 0.91 update.

So now it will be even more fun making game entries for the contest. With pause and all sorts.

Looks like we have a few contestants now. And thanks weswog for the video review offer.

Hardly slept last night planning my game in my head.

It's never too late to join in, so if your read this. . In a dark whispery voice "join us".

Start your own competition maybe? But wait till this one's done? :D

I agree, two weeks is a while to spend away from a main game. But i have a game idea that's been in my head a while, and squeezing it into two weeks will make it come to life and under budget time wise with any luck.

Who knows? I just know I can't do this particular compo due to game launching duties!

    @cbt

Sorry about missing your post. I started writing a response last night on my iphone, when our 1 year old monster woke up and by the time she had settled again it was time to collapse into bed.

    So here goes again..

Glad you 'LOVE' the idea. I too saw PeachPellens comp and it was a real shame when it got limited to Corona only.

I agree about the 'Theme' next time I'll definitely try and give a bit more warning, and announce a 'theme' on the start of the challenge. Really like the idea of setting up a regular competition. Even if I'm not taking part I'd be happy starting one and offering a video edit as a prize.

Personally for me the 48 hour challenge would be hard to create anything half decent, as I can only muster maybe 4 hours work a day at the very best. Family duties/work get in the way most of the time. So a 2 week challenge means I can put some time a side for design, development, a tiny bit of R&D, graphics, audio, testing and publishing.

This time any theme goes, but your only eligible for any prizes/judging if you keep us updated on your game development on this thread... so we can see how it grows...i.e. scanned in sketches, early vid of game idea with blank actors, messages about how its going, graphic style, menu design/discussion... what ever really.

    Little change of plan...

For anyone working on a game for this contest, please start your own thread, detailing your progress, problems, images etc as it grows.

'Think outside the box contest game- ' IN YOUR TOPIC TITLE, and then simply add a link to your games own thread in this one.

It'll keep your info and this one a bit tidier.

Here's a link to my game thread, 'ESCAPE ARTIST'.

I would love to join in!!! I'm not that good at GameSalad, but I've got a few good ideas... is there anyway it could be a february thing? Like instead of the 21st of February, we could submit it by the end of the month? Because I have to get my art and sounds AND programming (you know gamesalad stuff) done all in that period of time. I'll create my own thread though... man, this sounds awesome, I think I'm going to do an Adventure / Platformer game!!!
  • forkliftforklift Member Posts: 386
I would love to join, except that I want to have a theme to build for. Even if it's a abstract concept theme.
  • StormyStudioStormyStudio United KingdomMember Posts: 3,989
For Forklift and for anyone else wanting theme. (Next time I'll do a theme from the start)

    The theme is 'The Moon'....

and welcome aboard Obering... it's only been going a day so you've still got 13 days to work on your game...just see what you can get done in 2 weeks.

  • RiffelRiffel Member Posts: 1,272
    Love the ideia! I'm in!!
  • oberningoberning Member Posts: 105
So do I still need a theme?? Cause I have some really great ideas, but if you want me to follow the theme... :(
  • cbtcbt Member Posts: 644
    @Stormystudio

I understand how hard it is for you (and probably most of users here) to put something decent in 48 hours. Maybe we can brainstorm and find ways to steal 2 days out of our lives :P

And, definitely, I'm in! (Well, I have that game idea I wanted to make sometime. I will experiment a little, and see if its "makeable" in two weeks. If it is, I'm really in! :D)

    @QS
I don't think I can hold the responsibility even a simple contest. Sometimes I can't even see my computer for two days. Thats why I can't do anything that depends on me being there :)

No offense but I'm glad you have some other works to do. I don't want unfair competition..

**Unfair competition in a sense means that the competitors compete on unequal terms, because favourable or disadvantageous conditions are applied to some competitors but not to others.**

(And I'm not even talking about moving between different points in time. With your game-making skills..)

    :D

I've been working on a game for a while does it have to be a game we just started or can it be a game we've been working on that we finish within 2 weeks?
  • StormyStudioStormyStudio United KingdomMember Posts: 3,989
At orbs, how long have you been working on it? Ideally you'd start a new one for the contest so it's fair. Go on, just start a little 2 week project.
  • StormyStudioStormyStudio United KingdomMember Posts: 3,989
Just posting to say, I've had confirmation from YodaPollo that he will be the guest judge for the contest.

(I'll not actually put my game in the running, since I setup the competition...so it looks likes its between 3 of you at the moment...anything from Prodigo, Forklift, Eightbit Remix, RH, Dr Glickert, anyone else?)...
