Is it possible to make a "Trail" with actors?

Hey, question for all you good fellas. I want to make a trail with actors. So say like a Snake is made up of 6 different actors, all the images link together to create the snake. If the snake moves up, I want his tail-end to trail behind him in a train like fashion, not just move into the upward position. I know how to make the images change according to way that part of the snake is going, but I don't know how to make the trail.
Any help would be hot!
