I make that post to say to all the people who don't have this awesome tool : BUY IT, YOU WILL LOVE IT FOR SURE....

I'm very happy with that awesome tool from Deep Blue Ideas...
(Darren and Wayne)

I optimized my Poker game, now it's more stable, the file size = 16Mb (25Mb before!)

And the graphics = same quality with a little more compression, all easy, LOVE IT! lol

If my game = 16Mb now, that means that we can download it using 3G?
(i can't test, i only have a wifi iPad...)

Wayne & Darren, YOU ROCK!!!!!!!

I bought Project Optimizer and it shrunk my 22 MB project down to 14 so I can have users download it over 3G/Edge. Thanks Darren and Wayne, your tools are so awesome, I now have just about all of them. With all the time it saves me, I'll have enough time to look for another job to help pay for all your stuff :)

I'm sure GS Optimiser is very good at sorting out stability problems but the most powerful PNG optimisation tool ImageOptim is free and open source. So if project size is your main concern you should try that first.

The work that Wayne & Darren have put into their tools is very impressive, I bought a couple of them, but you don't need to spend $50 to optimise your project size.

Thats not the only reason people buy it though. It searches for bugs in your game and practically fixes it. Great tool.

anyone with an 3G ipad will now be able to download it over 3G and not just wireless.
  • Rob2Rob2 Member Posts: 2,402
@Dreamlab Absoutely, and when I've sold my other soul I will be buying it:) But if project size is your main concern then free PNG optimisation is the way to go, because that seems to be what most people are raving about.

can you or someone give an example as to what type of bugs it fixes?
I'm curious to buy it but I'm kind of feeling that if I just look over my work carefully and look
for attributes that aren't used as well as doing PNG optimization with PNG Crusher i'd be getting
the same benefit as the tool?

Yah, you are right. I use imageoptim also. I havent bought any of darrens tools yet but I think I might tonight. I am debating which ones though. For sure the merger, which comes with the screen grid, most likely the optimizer, but idk if I want the resizer. Its useful, but do I need it yet? and I know I don't want project attributes. I don't see the point to that one.

Merger is excellent, you can't go wrong with that, but if your project is in a tangle and you are beginning to loose touch with things, very easily done with the quirky GS interface, then I'm sure GS Optimiser will save your life.
  • DreamLabDreamLab Member Posts: 2,127
What about the resizer? like I wouldn't be using it for a month. but for sure I will buy it in the future. Should I just buy it now on the discount? or wait and save 80 bucks

I think if you are very methodical and structured in your approach then you maybe don't need it as much. But even the tidiest of big projects can benefit from seeing the whole project split down into a list of attributes, actors and graphics. You can't do that in GS and when a project gets big just navigating between a couple of actors can cause it to slow down to a crawl. It does plenty more useful things as well.

The Deep Blue Ideas tools are just so fast!

    @Stormtrix :
I had some bugs in my poker project, my game crashed a lot.. I used GS Optimizer and now all works very well lol, no crashs anymore! I don't know what correction on it, but now it's ok and i have a smaller file, and a perfect project ;)

    @DreamLab :
Resizer is very good too... Save a lot of time

Hold on. If you use 3G, Can't you download a game/app over 20mb?

Or it is because the iphone takes forever to download it?

there not refering to the 3g iphone if thats what you mean, they mean the 3g network plan.

anything over 20mb cant be downloaded over your network plan, you have to have wifi and download over wifi

So I have the program but I don't know how to actually use it. It says I have quite a few spawning errors and quite a few "X/Y has uneven values" errors. How would I go about fixing these issues?
  • jonmulcahyjonmulcahy Member, Sous Chef Posts: 10,408
Your x/y values means you put actors with odd numbers as positions, cutting an odd number in half will cause it to lie on a .5 number and make it blurry.

Not sure what the spawning errors are.
  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Member Posts: 5,394
The spawning issues just mean you have used a rule to spawn. There is no good or bad way to spawn, using that behaviour (especially if used a lot) can be a massive resource and memory hog. Where possible you should avoid spawning. The spawning errors just indicate that you are using the spawn behaviour as you should try to avoid it for better optimisation

I just purchased this tool - it's amazing! I didin't know that I had a few odd sizes of images and some unused graphics!
  • UtopianGamesUtopianGames Member Posts: 5,692
The spawning errors are a guide....if we see what we consider excessive spawning we give out a warning.

I found spawning an actor that spawns another actor really impacts on performance and you can noticed a judder as GS catches up.

Its there for a guide basically.

    Darren.

this tool is great i'm new to this scene i put my game through GS optimizer and it told me some of my images didnt have equal sizes so it helps with issues as well as compressing your game and saving space

Hey that's cool I was wondering how I was gonna shrink some of my games, Might just have to save up for a couple weeks.
Darren and Waynes projects are very good.. I just bought the Bronze Bundle, Although I don't quite get the use of the Grid tool, otherwise really happy :)

Would optimizer help my game? I just added the last graphic and sound effect into the first full scene of my game and it has now starting crashing when I test it on my ipod touch 4. Total memory usage is 117 MB.

The game works fine on my ipod touch 1.

Am I missing something Jason, or iPod Touch 4 should be able to run more complex games than iPod Touch 1?

Answering to your question: GS Project Resizer will check your rules if there are any errors, check your instances and actors (it will show you broken rules and unused actors), check if you spawn anything, also it will check your images and sounds (check names, dimensions, DPI and unused images and sounds).
  • LuckyLurcherLuckyLurcher Member Posts: 343
With resolution independence enabled the memory usage is only about 30+ MB on ipod touch 1. I will probably buy the optimizer, thanks.

You can also try and delete as many actors as you can, and use inctances.
