Ok. So I am having trouble deciding which of Darrens tools to buy. I really want the merger, and optimizer. I am not so sure about the resizer because I do not own an ipad and it would save me some money. I still don't see the point for the project attributes. and the screen grid is a given. just vote, or comment. either is fine. and if you want, state your opinion on the importance of each of them and how much I would use them. THANKS!

I would get the merger and optimizer to get rid of bugs and make the games run better. I would only get the first two... you will get the most out of them. Only get the others if your really need them for what you are doing.

Well Wayne emailed me and put my project through it. It did reduce the total size about one megabyte smaller and fixed a few issues but it also messed up others. But that was my experience. For all I know it was the clutter I had in my project that was unfixable. I still say it's awesome bcuz it fixed a serious issue I had :)

It all depends on what you need and what you can do. The merger is my favourite just because of all the demos I was able to use with my game and make my life a lot easier. The optimiser is also a great timesaver, but honestly you can do what the optimiser does yourself and with a couple of free compression tools, it will just take you about 10 times as long :)

I don't have the resizer but IMO its the same deal as the optimizer, you can do what it does yourself, it will just take a hell of a lot longer.

Hi QbAnYtO, if you remember, you were having problems with your project, and we offered to test our in house TEST VERSION of Optimizer, to see if it could find/fix issues with your game. This was pre the Optimizers release.
You'll also remember, the software found a lot of errors in your project, from file naming to incorrect calculations etc. The tool also reduced your project by 4mb, which yielded a net 1mb saving when viewed in GameSalad.

After the software had processed, you discovered an issue with your animations, which was directly linked to a bug in GameSalad version 0.9.1. The bug was reported to GS, but we implemented changes to Optimizer to work with/around the bug. In our tests, you had a non functioning game, but after processing with Optimizer, a functioning game was produced, after optimising and following the warnings generated.

We certainly do and would appreciate more beta testers and files to test in the future.

They've all been great for me, its too hard to only suggest 1, it really depends on what you want.

The merger is great as it allows you to merge multiple projects together, this is especially handy for demos/templates. That can save you loads of time and saves having to manually enter all those attributes and formulas.

Resizer is an absolute god send! A few times i've thought about porting my iphone games to ipad but the work that comes with it, especially on a game that hasnt sold too well just put me off. You'll be amazed with how much time this thing saves you. Its down to this tool that Darren would make an ipad version of running wild and its the same for other games like 'Rodent Rage'.

Optimizer highlighted a broken nested rule i had missed, without it, i probably wouldnt have picked it up and my game would of been submitted without the fix, causing it to be very unstable. Its also good to fix all your bad file names which i would of never of known about. It also highlighted a couple of images i hadnt sized correctly which i wouldnt of spotted and also let me know that the DPI was wrong in areas. So i found that was valuable as well.

So its hard to say really, i see it as a suite, i wanted all 3 and find it hard to imagine GS without it now :)

I own the resizer and the optimizer, both are amazing products that have saved me days and made my games run faster and more stable. On a large project resizer is amazing to do what would take about 2 or 3 days in 2 or 3 minutes. Optimizer, as someone said above, finds those errors that can cause crashes on some devices and has improved the speed and size of all games I have used it with. My latest project I am working on multiple mini games that are currently individual projects (as I am using ad hoc builds of each with testers). I will buy merger to put them all together.

So the animation issue was a bug? I didn't know. That's crazy. Either way I still recommend resizer and the other apps u guys created. Good stuff!

@beefy what are the bad file names that you mention ?
  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Member Posts: 5,394
@rob2, its images and sounds that are not named correctly, i wasnt ever aware there is a do's and don't when naming stuff, i just import them as they are on my computer. I dont know the technicallities but Optimizer renames and relinks the files for you

this is from an earlier post by Wayne:

"Space's in names, are inherently bad and can/could lead to problems further down the line. Ideally all file names, should not contain Spaces, start with a number, contain a minus symbol ( - ) or contain exclamation marks ( ! ).

The tool considers these as illegal and replaces with a friendly underscore ( _ ). This option is not 'strict' but should be considered. If for example your compiled app runs with WHITE images, this is sometimes due to image file naming."
