Imaging question for iPhone 3, iPhone 4, and iPad

So early next week I'm sitting down with an artist to make the images for my game. In my head I know what i want the game to look like but I need to know what I should have him do to make my mental picture become a reality AND, it fall within the Resolution Independence aspects and iPad specs, etc. etc.

So my question is what do I tell him to do? I know that the artwork should be in .PNG format, but what about all that resolution independence and such?

The images have to be twice as large and then click on Resolution Independence for the iPhone 4 right? How does this effect iPhone 3G/s phones?

Do I need to have him make separate images for the iPad version? Is that a better choice than just getting the Resizer and blowing up the smaller images? Or should I have him create iPad images and shrink them for the iPhone? But then how does that relate to the Resolution Independence? Whoa! I'm super confused right now.

Just tell me what I need him to do to make the game look great on an iPad, iPhone 3G and iPhone 4. Thanks.

    I would recommend you decide what size you want your ipad characters to be and create all of the art for that. then you can most likely get away with just using that for you iphone version too and if it needs to be scaled down it wont be that much.

    I thought the iPad was like 1024 x 780 or something like that... Should I make the game 960x640 for the iPad and bring in the walls a bit or something?
