Hey everyone...
This is a sad day for me.. I just got back from the gym and found out that someone broke into my home and stole my mac book pro among other things..
The saddest part is that I had been working on a game for a two months now about 2-3 hours a day and I was about 3 weeks away from finishing it and now its gone ... I made several backups but all of them inside my mac..
Anyway.. I didn't made this post to whine about my misfortune.. I made it because like me I'm sure that some of you out there don't have your hard work backed up in another computer or in an external hard drive. I strongly advice you to do it right now. Because trust me you never know when something might happen..
that is all

bueno, now u know the world is not a safe place but i'm sure u know that. flash drives, drop box, etc etc
I was working on a game while flying on an airplane, with no internet. I had about 20% battery (supposedly) according to the battery meter on my macbook. Because of GameSalad's frequent crashes, I save every few minutes, and one of the moments that I pressed Cmd-S to save, the battery died and everything shut down. Upon restarting, I found that the main XML file (object.xml) had been only partially re-saved and was completely corrupted and unusable.
The game I am working on was at about 60 scenes at the time, and over a dozen had been made during that flight. I was able to download the object.xml file from Dropbox (which was from the night before), restore it, and rebuild the scene references in the object.xml file by hand, surprisingly saving all of the scenes. Had I been connected to the internet before the battery died, I would have had everything up to date in Dropbox and been able to recover everything without any extra effort, but even with the manual need to rebuild object.xml it was completely worth it. Really I can't put a price on how valuable dropbox is.
Now, in reality it would be more useful if GameSalad's save process involved first writing temporary files and then replacing the original files with the temporary files. This would avoid any possibility of data loss in the event of a crash while saving. But in the end Dropbox is a huge asset if gamesalad crashes while saving, since you can download previous revisions of the files.
So there's my testimonial..
Thanks for the tip to, I often send my game via email to technical for assistance, I guess I could even just upload copies to my own email address.
Sorry to hear that mate, thanks for the advice - I guess when you do it again you'll make it even better this time and will have less trouble to make it as you'll know how to fix most the problems. Don't let it get you down, I pray that you get your stuff back or some kind of reimbursement.
I was using drop box but it got filled up...(Maybe I'll reorganise how I do it)...or start paying for extra space...
I will do some research

As Jon said if you did a viewer test then you can get to a compressed version of your project with iPhone Configuration Utility (Apple and free) unfortunately you will not be able to access your behaviors without considerable effort (xml fun) but at least you can get to your artwork.
Also if you did any test builds there is a copy flopping about with GS somewhere but they would have to help you there.

I personally am paranoid about this sort of thing. I got burned a few times in college where I lost everything to some kind hardware failure.
So I now not only back up my work to a external hard drive that I take with me every day (in case of a situation as stated above happens) but I also put things in Dropbox (as suggested already) Dropbox is great, but I would prefer a proper off-site SVN server, which would serve as backup and version control.
But just wanted to tell everyone that your words inspired me and I've been on a working streak and I think I already remade 20% of my game back in the last 10 hours... I know it doesn't sound like much but taking into consideration that it took me two months to be were I was .. 20% in a day doesn't sound that bad IMO..
so thanks everyone once again, this is really one of the best communities..
ps: @CabacoAppNews You can seriously drop dead. How could you say something like that man.. Even after I helped you before when you had a problem. All and all I still hope nothing like these ever happens to you..
