I've been quietly working away at it for the last few days but currently being bogged down with uni. Here's a little update video:
The video is really laggy, does anyone else have this problem with ishowuHD? Game runs perfectly on computer and my iPhone 3g, haven't got around to attempting any graphics yet.
So I've hardly had any time to work on this at all.
Here's a quick video with some test graphics and it's clear to say that I need help on them.
It certainly looks far from arctic at the moment, more like just off a tropical island. The water needs to look colder and the the sand should be ice/rock i reckon. I can sort those. But the penguin looks off. It's the first time I've picked up illustrator to create game graphics so I'm fairly pleased with them.
Here's the penguin, how should I improve it? I trying to end up with an angry birds look but I;m not getting too far Also, how can I scale the illustrator without losing quality and so the strokes and everything are in proportion? Need the penguin smaller to fit the actor. Couldn't figure out how to make the light grey section rounded.
With the submissions due today and having no time to work on it over the last two weeks I've been franticly trying to get a lot done today. I've done quite a bit of 'behind the scenes' work that you can't see in the video, but here's and update with new graphics and scoring system.
I'm not sure what to think, it doesn't look as good as it did as a still image in my opinion, maybe i went overboard with the parallax scrolling? [I don't even know if I did it right].
Let me start by saying this looks cool. This is shaping up into something really good. I think the parallax scrolling looks good. However, I have a couple of suggestions that might help out a bit.
1. Create a bubble trail behind the penguin. Perhaps you can include a particle effect of tiny bubble graphics to emit from the back of the penguin. This may convey a greater sense of speed and motion when it is moving through the water.
2. A splash effect on the water's surface when the penguin dives and leaps out of the water.
3. Some animations to the penguin will be nice too.
Again these are just suggestions. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the great feedback! All of those were on the too do list just haven't got round to them yet, trying to get the major parts down first then I'll finish off with the details.
Don't think I will get any more time to work on this tonight (GMT) so here's what I have so far. Not sure whether this will be the final version before the competition is up as I haven't seen much mentioned about it.
Obviously there is still a way to go in terms of polish and graphics although I have most of the gameplay down. There are one or two elements that I still want to implement but shouldn't take long.
Also, just ran it on my [pretty clunky & slow] old iPhone 3g. Here are the stats:
Is this good/bad? [considering it's a 3G]. It was perfectly playable for the most of it, only a tiny bit of lag but I get that with all games. Guess I don't have the menu/ high scores or sound yet though.

Haven't had any time to work on it today but hopefully I will tomorrow, might dream up some character ideas in the mean time.

Thanks for any tips!
I'll get right on them, had flippers before but they just looked silly. Time to try again!
And yep, I'm going to get to the animation once I've got the design down.

Here's the still, would love opinions.

some bubbles behind the penguin would be awesome, and could easily be added using particles.
a splash effect would be great too
make the penguins legs kick, or arms flap.
maybe put some fish swimming in the background? or a shipwreck?
the gameplay looks great, but now you gotta add details
