TOTB2 vs Forklift

edited November -1 in Working with GS (Mac)
Just announcing that as promised during TOTB1, I'm in for #2.

Since Friday's theme announcement, I've been racking my brain and beating myself up probably unnecessarily hard trying to invent something different. There are a lot of neat, top quality entries to this competition so far. I'm excited to take part and I know if I lose, it will be to a worthy game. I might fall flat on my face, it might not sell, but I'm cooking up something unique and dare I say - genre busting "outside the box".

    Name: Eskimo Adventure

Story: Global warming has broken an ice chunk off from the main land and an igloo along with it! Help the eskimo family survive their long journey.

Hook/Mechanic: Think a right/left scroller mixed with lemming-esque task controls. Events come from either the right or left. Tap an eskimo not working and assign them to a problem/event. Fish to gather food, skin seals for clothing, fight off animal attacks, outsmart obstacles, explore, survive, etc. The game continues as long as you have an eskimo alive.

Great image. As for the game, I honestly can't wait. Sounds like a great idea, good luck with it!

Thanks for all the kind words.

Here's a mockup of animation and further expanding the style. I am controlling the two characters with the arrow keys, just so you can see them moving. Soon I'll have the touch/task control working. I composed this music to be pretty relaxing, light and fun. Hope it comes across that way.

Eskimos all now behave independently and randomly on their own. Each has a unique personality: Yellowish eskimo looks at player most often to ask what to do, Darker/blueish (spear) eskimo is more stoic and will mostly watch the horizon, Reddish eskimo is agitated easily, walks around more often than others. Their distinct personalities will develop more in the coming days. Tomorrow I hope to implement gibberish speak to enhance their personalities. All eskimos have natural breathing and idle animations, don't like to bunch together for more than a second or so, etc.

I've now implemented a full day and night cycle to the game, which will effect the events differently. For the purpose of the video, I've sped up the day/night cycle by 10X, but everything else is normal speed.

Now it's time for bed... still have to keep that day job!

oh my god.. I had the EXACT same idea graphics wise! pixelated eskimos. (I only am good at pixel art) well it looks like I am going to have to make mine look a lot different :)

at least the game types aren't anything alike!

Looking forward to your progress report, idoistuff. Originally, I had the idea of using animals in fur coats, but the imagery of lemming-like eskimos kept popping in my head. I also wanted the player to begin to relate and/or sympathize with certain characters. You know, have a favorite eskimo personality that they wanted to dearly protect. Just seemed more natural to go with tiny eskimos. That, and penguins as players is kind of beat to death!

lovin this idea...I imagine its going to be a mammoth task tracking tonnes of attributes to make the gameplay work.

... I've just downloaded Pixen out of interest, just to see how easy pixel art is... its a very nice little tool... (I'm not thinking of doing pixel art for TOTB2 though...)

Never used pixen, you'll have to let me know how it pans out. I do everything in photoshop elements.

Dude GREAT JOB!! I love the art style and the day/night cycles... Some things to change though would be the music (it's a little too cheesy), also make the day cycle a little smoother (and slower!!) like when it changes to night... But again, keep up the great work... This competition is AWESOME, there's so many great games!! Good Luck!!

This looks excellent. Love the art style, and the idea of personalities; reminds me a bit of Little Computer People meets Lemmings. Also, I like the music, nice and cheesy - suits the fun aesthetics!
  • forkliftforklift Member Posts: 386
oberning: I really enjoy the music style. Trying to keep it light-hearted and relaxing. All the same, I would love to hear your suggestion because I've also thought about a smooth jazz soundtrack. Also, if you read above the video, you'll notice that I said the day/night cycle was sped up 10 times it's normal pace.

Thanks everyone! Made some great progress last night:

Enhanced the aesthetics even more by tweaking the day/night cycle (timing of color changes, stars, cloud effects). Added minor particle effects. Implemented the eskimo selection buttons and have them responding verbally when chosen. That ate up most of my night.

I'm glad you like it. While a lot of other games are great in the competition, they aren't "thinking outside the box" as far as I'm concerned... lots of genres that are beat to death are represented, so I'm trying to stray farther and farther away from any familiar game formulas as this takes shape.

I've updated the environmental graphics. In this longer video you'll see the normal speed of the day/night cycle as was requested. You'll also notice the igloo, clouds, sky, weather & water all reflect changes during different phases of day and night. This will, as mentioned, trigger different events that the eskimos have to deal/interact with. I'm also showing gibberish speak, an early version of eskimo selection, and the fishing mechanic.

I have the menu screen working, but I want to hold that back for the next video.

Still trying to push the boundaries of normal gameplay and still playing hadron collider with my neurons... ideas spin around and smash apart on one another behind my face. har har

I need a fresh twist on this survival game, because being honest with myself, even if I randomize the 10 or so events that come at the player, I don't see it being much different than a diner rush type of game - IE managing your time with each event/need. Maybe I want to go that route, but instinct tells me to mix it up even further. I could really use a good brainstorm session if anyone is willing to shout some ideas my way.

I gotta say it's pretty tempting to hit the drawing board again. I feel like taking a new direction with this IP. Switching gears to more puzzle action instead of only survival. Time is ticking...
