control methods (advice required)

Hi as the title says, I'm looking for a little advice on control setups. (not sure if this is the right forum, sorry)
I'm making a platform game that has elements of adventure and shooter games. It's not supposed to be really fast paced, and will focus more on the narrative side (exploring etc) than requiring skills and dexterity to win. In fact I don't even plan on giving the player access to a gun until about a third into the game.
The game will be developed primarily for iPhone, and will require input to:
move left + right
jump
shoot
use items (pickup/drop like on the old Dizzy games)
(and possibly duck)
A video of the game style is here (doesn't show much about the gameplay I know):

So yeah, I'm just after general feedback/advice on whether to go for some sort of onscreen joystick/d-pad setup with a few buttons to fire etc, or whether to use tilt controls for part of it, whether to have point-n-click style movement or anything else really. Your thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.
