Sprite Creation HELP!!

my problem when trying to create my games is that although the games themselves are good, the graphics look rubbish, i was wondering which free program people would recommend to create images and if anyone knows any good tutorials on how to create professional looking sprites

    i would suggest GIMP and wacom tablet.. and practice, practice, practice.. :)
