does updating your GS game overwrite the installed one?

say i have a game in the appstore. u played it. u beat 5 levels out of 10 or whatever. but then i release an update and you choose to update it for new weapons or whatever i included in the update....
will your progress be wiped out or stay intact? do you have to start alll over from level 1?
