First GS Game Thread

Hello , my name is Brian , i am 32 and a art and animation student over at http://www.train2game.com/ .
As part of my portfolio work I am going to attempt to make a scrolling space shooter based on this template http://www.deepblueapps.com/Deep_Blue_Ideas_Ltd./GSTemplateVTS.html

"Earth is under attack , you must escape the city by clearing a path for your fighter plane so it can reach the launch pad , from here you must take the fight to the enemy in deep space "
LV.1 Destroy ground invasion , when X score is reached bomb power up is granted which will be needed to destroy end level boss if not then mission has failed .
LV.2 leave earth avoiding flack being shot into the sky gain first weapon power up to complete end level boss
LV.3 stop space station attack , gain second weapon power up , end level boss
LV.4 safe guard space ship , end level boss
LV.5 deep space trudge lots of enemy , very frantic and hard all enemy must be distorted
LV.6 the enemy home world confusion one huge boss , but its not the enemy strong hold but a friendly planet who now give you the ship you will need to disstory the enemy fleet awaiting you in the next levels
LV.7 deep space trudge , all new weapons and bomb , old enemies seem easier to kill , electro magnetic clouds hamper movement , double tapping fire make your weapon charge for a "big shot" but reduces speed at the same time some enemy now shoot in your direction . end level boss shield must be gained to complete level our else mission failed
LV.8 home world , lots of ground attack , masses of weapon and boom upgrades preparing you for the last level
LV.9 final defence , an accumulation of all the hardest baddies and mines ect , three end level bosses
LV.10 the brain , all hell brakes lose massive level all of the glass housing the brain must be broken and the brain its self shot , an accumulation of all weapons and shield and bombs have to be used
Controls and HUD
player can move freely over the vertically scrolling screen using up down left and right , lives scores and booms are seen on screen , one button each for fire and bombs with a max of 3 or 5 bombs at any one time lives will increase with score and at set levels no max on lives
this game will be a clone of many other games , fast striker , super swiv , xenon II megablast , 1942 , r-type ect
NOW FOR THE PROBLEM , i have no idea what im doing , i am going through the videos and tutorials and trying to peace it together but i really could with all the help i can get , so far i have figured out how to scroll the back ground and use several layer at different speeds .
WHERE AND HOW WOULD YOU START A PROJECT LIKE THIS ??
would i start with the start screen then make 10 different levels scenes ?
HAS ANYONE MADE ANYTHING LIKE THIS ??
DOES IT SOUND TO HARD A THING TO DO ??
WOULD I BE BETTER OFF TRYING TO MAKE A GAME LIKE CANNON FODDER ??
this game is not to make money (although that would be nice ) it is to show of some funky graphics , i will have no trouble making killer graphics and animations but i am going to need help . if anyone has the time to team up that would be grate . in 6 months i will have the chance to get a work placement with a games company organised by http://www.train2game.com/ having a title already online will improve my chances ten fold
